Overview

The Registered Nurse in Same Day Surgery, in addition to general nursing, is responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care and to actively participating in and contributing to the management of preoperative and postoperative patient. The nursing staff is required to assess the patient and resources, plan for the scheduled surgery and post discharge care, implement the plan, and evaluate the patient's and family's understanding of the information and their ability to provide for self-care at home.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes the assessment, identifies problems, makes nursing diagnoses, and formulates goals, teaching plans and outcomes to create an individualized plan of care to Same Day Surgery patients.
  • Prioritizes and implements an efficient nursing plan of care relating to the care Same Day Surgery patients.
  • Consistently conducts timely evaluations, recognizes changes in patient conditions, determines when reassessments are needed, and adjusts the plan of care as necessary.
  • Compares expected and achieved outcomes of nursing care utilizing the plan of care.
  • Evaluate patient's response to interventions and communicates with other healthcare team members the need to revise or maintain plan of care.
  • Assesses patients at intervals as stated in policies and procedures: preoperative and postoperative.
  • Develops an individualized perioperative patient plan of care.
  • Implements the plan of care by: protecting the patient from injury, managing the patient's specimens in the appropriate manner, ensuring the availability of the operative and anesthesia consent, verifies that procedures documented on the operative consent is consistent with the operative schedule and patient statement, to include site, site and level, communicating the patient's status to the appropriate parties throughout the continuum of care, administering medications safely and correctly, performing interventions to maintain the patient's wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels, performing interventions to maintain the status of the patient's genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels, performing interventions to protect the patient from surgical site infection and providing education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure.
  • Evaluates the patient's progress toward attaining outcomes.
  • IV therapy to include Insertion, use of aseptic technique, Site, application Dressing, Tubing changes and Use of pumps.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge necessary to provide care to patients with: potential for respiratory dysfunction, alterations in cardiac output, alterations/changes in hydration status, alterations in core temperature and altered Level of Consciousness (LOC).
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment within the clinical area in accordance with established standards and regulations
  • Assessment of pain upon admission and through the stay.
  • Has knowledge of the following procedures and ability to perform: nursing responsibilities for patient on ventilator, defibrillation - adult and pediatric, airway management - adult and pediatric, code management, assist with intubation, preoperative hair removal and skin cleansing, pressure injury prevention, and preoperative glucose control.
  • Discharge and or Transfers care as appropriate.
  • Delegates tasks as appropriate per the state Nurse Practice Act and job descriptions.
  • Documents nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly.
  • Collaborates effectively with other disciplines as appropriate.
  • Participates in quality review and performance improvement projects.
  • All other duties as requested.

Qualifications

Education:

Internal & 1199 SEIU:
    • Graduate of accredited nursing program(s).
    • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.

Non 1199 SEIU Candidates:
    • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
    • Master's Degree in Nursing, preferred.

Experience:
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience in related field of nursing (ICU, PACU, OR, medical surgical).

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Critical thinking, math, and computer skills.
  • Works as a team player.
  • Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Excellent oral and communication skills.
  • Decision making and problem solving.
  • Able to read, write, see and hear English.

Licenses, Certifications:
  • Current NY State RN License required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association, required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association, required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required.

Physical Requirements:
  • Physically demanding, high-stress environment requiring prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift and carry items weighing up to 35 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
  • An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Blood and body fluids, Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, radiation, and repetitive motions.
  • Full range of body motion, able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving patients.
  • Manual and finger dexterity, as well as hand and eye coordination.
  • Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range
  • Frequently sitting at desk working on computer
  • Ability to flex working hours.
