Full Job Description
Position Purpose

Under the supervision of the Institute for Cancer Leadership and Medical Oncology physicians, this position provides optimal patient care utilizing knowledge and skills within the context of the nursing process and the theory of human caring. The incumbent participates in a collaborative process with the team to meet the patient's needs, provides psychosocial support, education and teaching to cancer patients and their families. The incumbent is accountable for individualized patient outcomes over an entire episode of care. This position participates in a collaborative process with the physician to meet a patient's needs.

Nature and Scope

This position is challenged to treat human responses to health problems in the specialized population of medical oncology patients. The incumbent must provide optimal patient care through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patients and their families. The incumbent must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensor, psychosocial, and safety appropriate for adults and geriatric patients and meets standards of quality as measured by the unit/department age specific competency standards. This position is responsible to demonstrate proficiency in body mechanics, fire safety, infection control, patient safety and CPR.

The incumbent uses both teaching and communication skills, both written and verbal to adequately teach patients and their families. When possible, the family or those significant to the family are considered as part of the assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation efforts of the Registered Nurse (RN). This position coordinates care between other professionals as indicated.

This position is challenged to communicate effectively with different types of people; function efficiently under stress; and be able to identify and maintain priorities; respond to simultaneous requests and remain courteous and tactful. The incumbent must be familiar with standard operating procedures in ancillary departments to schedule diagnostic tests and treatment without conflict.

Evidence based nursing practice; along with critical thinking skills are required to provide optimally safe patient care when interacting with internal and external contacts and exercising judgment and making decisions. Professional nursing practice is congruent with the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.

This position provides direct patient care.

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. Appropriate education to obtain and maintain Registered Nursing licensure in the state of Nevada

Experience:

Minimum 12 months experience in an Oncology setting preferred

License(s):

Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Nevada RN license.

Certification(s):

AHA BLS certification is required upon hire.

ACLS certification is required upon hire.

OCN certification preferred. If does not hold the OCN certification, incumbent is required to complete at least 12 cancer-related continuing education nursing contact hours upon completion of first year of employment and on an annual basis thereafter. If certified, incumbent must maintain minimum qualifications in order to maintain certification:

ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate is required within 90 days from date of hire.

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
