Med/Surg Registered Nurse (RN) - Full-Time, Variable ShiftsShift Details
- Full-Time: 3x12-hour shifts (day or night, scheduled as needed)
- Every other weekend (EOW) required
- Holiday shifts required
- 2 on-call shifts per 4-week period
- Contract must run into February minimum - no exceptions
- Extended contracts through holidays are required
Position Overview
- The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients and families
- Assesses patient need, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient's episode
- Develops specialized skill in the area of care for patients admitted for medical conditions
- Provides care to adult, adolescent, and geriatric populations with medical conditions
- Accountable for patient and family education to assist in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing
- Expected to promote comfort and provide emotional support in a Healing Environment
Job Functions
- Applies nursing knowledge and skill in the delivery of care
- Assesses patient and family needs through active listening, social perceptiveness, and analyzing data or information obtained through direct observation/assessment, technology, or health team communication
- Creates a developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant, individualized plan of care to address the nature and scope of identified health problems
- In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and healthcare team members, sets goals and monitors the patient's progress
- Adjusts the plan of care based on patient response or change in condition/reprioritization of needs
- Promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient
- Encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to accomplish the best possible patient outcome
- Teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with the individual's education, training, and scope of practice
- Understands the personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies
- Motivates the patient and family by teaching them what is needed to continue care and healing at home
- Assesses patient and family learning styles and structures sessions to maximize understanding
- Seeks "teachable" moments during the care delivery process to emphasize pertinent information
- Asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in the self-care process
- Provides tools and information to assist the patient's family after discharge
- Documents the education provided and the patient/family response to the education
- Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and uses the results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in individual nursing practice and care delivery
- Engages in self-evaluation of practice, identifying strengths and areas in which professional development would be beneficial
- Takes accountability to increase knowledge and enhance skill
- Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
- Nursing practice reflects the importance of making a meaningful connection with the patient and family
- Seeks to develop a helping, trusting, and caring relationship by being present in the moment of interaction, listening, communicating, engaging, and anticipating patient and family needs
- Strives to understand what is most important to the patient and family, acknowledging that the patient and family are the central focus of all care and services

Occupational Exposure
- Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens is reasonably anticipated
- Required tasks involve potential contact with blood, body fluids, and tissues
Required Qualifications
- NYS RN Licensure
- BLS certification (AHA only)
- ACLS certification (AHA only)
- NIHSS certification
- Minimum of two (2) years' experience as a Registered Nurse in a Med/Surg environment
