Position Description

We are seeking Registered Nurses to join unit 8B (Blood and Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program) on a full-time permanent basis to provide family-centered nursing care to children along the continuum of care.

In this role, you will assess complex nursing needs and provide well-rounded care to support children and families as they experience acute and chronic illnesses. What is 8B?

8B is a 17-bed inpatient unit. It is the only Pediatric BMT/Cellular Therapy Program servicing all of Ontario as well as the Atlantic Provinces. We serve a uniquely complex population of patients and families challenged with life-altering acute and chronic illnesses that require focused and highly skilled management along a continuum of health services both in Hospital and in the community.

Here's What You'll Get to Do on 8B

• Nurses on 8B will learn and develop a valued skillset foundational to practice in acute care clinical settings:
• Management of complex intravenous and pharmacological therapies
• Administration of Hematopoietic Stem Cell and Cellular therapy products including but not limited to bone marrow, CORD transplants and CAR T cells and recognition of adverse reactions during infusion
• Administration of Chemotherapy/Biotherapy
• Management of post-transplant immunosuppression and rehabilitation
• Central Venous Access Device care, maintenance and trouble shooting
• Administration of blood products, oxygen therapy, enteral and parenteral nutrition
• Recognition and management of post-transplant complications
• Management of care across the phases of the illness continuum, including palliative and end-of-life care
• Navigation of complex psychosocial dynamics and care challenges related to life-threatening illness and its treatment
• Involvement in new and innovative therapies and clinical trials

• A Successful Start: You will participate in a comprehensive paediatric nursing orientation in conjunction with subspecialty orientation and a preceptored clinical practice experience to ensure you have the tools you need to be successful in our unique environment.
• Specialized Career Ladder and Skills Training: We advance our nurses based on performance and aptitude to train in specialized and highly sought-after skills such as the APHON
• Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Program. We offer cross-training opportunities in pediatric haematology/oncology throughout our ambulatory and inpatient program. 8B nurses may also train for unit-based leadership opportunities in a Clinical Support Nurse capacity, a group which functions with enhanced autonomy and navigational leadership amongst an interprofessional team.

• Continued Learning and Professional Development: Lifelong learning is encouraged through internal programs as well as through external means like academic and conference support. We encourage participation in one of our 6 unit-wide nursing practice committees, interprofessional care rounds, as well as preceptorship & mentorship programs.

Here's What You'll Need

Essential Requirements

• Graduate of an approved Baccalaureate Nursing Program
• Active General Class RN License through the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Possess 1+ years of clinical nursing experience in an RN capacity
• Candidates with less than 1 year of clinical RN experience are encouraged to apply to our New Graduate Nurse job opening JO# 24490

• Demonstrated ability to use your critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork abilities
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusivity

Preferred Qualifications

• Recent & related acute care nursing experience is strongly preferred
• Previous work experience in paediatrics or experience working with children is strongly preferred
• Experience in haematology/oncology is preferred

Employment Type

• Permanent full-time
• 1.0 FTE, including access to benefits, HOOPP pension plan & personal days
• Shift: days/nights/weekends/holidays
