Refining Area Inspector

Job Summary

The Marathon Los Angeles Refinery located in Carson/Wilmington, California is seeking an experienced Area Inspector to serve as the primary point of contact for fixed equipment integrity issues, including pressure vessels and piping circuits. This role ensures all fixed equipment complies with state regulations, refining standards, and company specifications. The Area Inspector will identify, communicate, and collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to mitigate mechanical integrity risks.

This position follows a Monday-Thursday onsite work schedule 10-hour shifts and core business hours are 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Candidates must also be available to work extended work hours as needed, support on-call 5 full weeks per year, support turnarounds and both planned and unplanned outages which can occur outside regular working hours.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough, hands-on field inspections to evaluate the condition of area equipment.
  • Monitor the condition of area equipment by planning, performing, and directing inspections, and recommend appropriate mitigation measures for equipment requiring repair or replacement.
  • Conduct jurisdictional inspections on CAL/OSHA-regulated equipment, such as boilers.
  • Maintain accurate equipment files and collaborate with the RBI Analyst to keep risk assessments current, ensuring compliance with MPC standards.
  • Develop scope and provide supporting documentation (justification, timing, preparation, etc.) for mechanical integrity work on fixed equipment, including routine maintenance, major repairs, and turnarounds.
  • Complete assigned Management of Change (MOC) and INTELEX tasks as directed by the Area Team Leader.
  • Document "as-found" and "as-left" conditions of fixed equipment to support risk-based work planning.
  • Partner with engineering and area teams to identify and support projects that enhance equipment reliability.
  • Assist in problem-solving using tools such as life cycle cost analysis, root cause analysis, HAZOPs, equipment history reviews, and risk-based work selection.
  • Participate in required training programs as identified by the Inspection Supervisor.
  • Serve as Program Manager for specialty projects and programs that support mechanical integrity at LAR.


Education, Experience and Skills:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED (Must be completed prior to start date).
  • Must have at least 5 years of Area Inspection experience in a refinery or petrochemical facility.
  • Must have a current API 510 (Pressure Vessel Inspection) and API 570 (Piping Inspection) certifications.
  • Must have the ability to obtain NBIC Certification and State of California Certificate of Competency.
  • Must be familiar with Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) methodologies in accordance with API 580 and 581.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must have good facilitation and leadership skills for conducting meetings. Must have effective communication and coordination skills across multiple organizational levels, including operations, maintenance, and engineering.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE (including respirator), perform physical tasks in the field, and successfully pass a hair drug test and physical examination.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without future visa sponsorship.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 5%.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 5 years of experience as an owner/operator inspector in a refinery or petrochemical facility, focusing on fixed equipment is preferred.
  • Possession of NBIC Certification and State of California Certificate of Competency, with relevant experience is preferred.
  • Current API 510 (Pressure Vessel Inspection) and API 570 (Piping Inspection) certifications, with a minimum of 10 years of inspection experience is preferred.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of API 653, API 571, API 580, API 581, and NBIC standards is preferred.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of ASNT Level II methods, including UTT, RTFI, MT, and PT is preferred.
  • Proven experience in turnaround planning and execution for inspection activities is preferred.
  • Familiarity with inspection software such as Meridium, APM, or PCMS is preferred.
  • Experience maintaining fixed equipment in accordance with Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP) is preferred.
