About the Program

The Ministry of the Solicitor General facility includes a 100-bed Secure Treatment Unit (STU) to service the needs of incarcerated offenders with mental illness; and the STU has been designated a Schedule 1 facility under the Mental Health Act by the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement and coordinate all therapeutic recreation programs within the facility.
  • Awareness of special needs related to individuals diagnosed with a serious mental illness.
  • Develop goals, objectives, therapeutic recreation programs, and services based on patients' needs, interests, and best practices.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures relevant to recreation and leisure programs and services.
  • Provide opportunities for patients to participate in recreation and leisure activities within the facility and community upon discharge.
  • Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary care team and facilitate quality management and risk management activities.
  • Complete assessments, reports, and develop individual recreation plans in accordance with MOHLTC Standards and TRO Standards of Practice.
  • Participate as an active member of the ROHCG Recreation Therapy Discipline and work in compliance with safety practices, policies, procedures, and Secure Treatment Unit Standard Operating Procedures.


Qualifications
  • University degree in Recreation/Leisure Studies or an Allied Health Degree with a post-grad Therapeutic Recreation diploma will be considered.
  • Experience working with clients living with moderate to severe mental illness, substance use disorders, and concurrent disorders across the lifespan.
  • Knowledge of the impact of diagnosis on leisure functioning.
  • Ability to develop, plan and lead a variety of recreation therapy, leisure education and participation programs that are client-centered, evidence-based and outcome oriented.
  • Experience conducting leisure assessments, developing and delivering therapeutic programs, evaluation of programs and services, documenting to reflect client-centered outcomes and progress, and facilitating links with the community.
  • Experience working in a hospital, interdisciplinary setting.
  • Experience with provision of individual and group programming, including goal setting.
  • Membership with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario is an asset.
  • Maintain workload measurement and data collection as required and input into the workload measurement system on a regular basis.


Language Requirements
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, comprehension, reading and writing. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset

Salary Range: 43.64 to 51.90 per hour
