Full Job Description
We are seeking to hire a candidate for our Railroad Yards Manager (2096). Opening Date: 07/13/2026 Closing Date: 07/23/2026 Job Grade: SAM 38 Salary Range: $73,164.00-$91,442.00 OVERALL DESCRIPTION Responsible for the safe movement of trains into, within and out of yards. Directs movement of equipment and crews to make up and breakdown trains. Ensures that revenue trains are properly staffed and reports and records discrepancies. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Maintains operation supervision of crews while in the yard to control the ingress and egress of rail train traffic into and out of the yard limits. 2. Directs the movement of equipment and crews to make up and break down trains. 3. Ensures revenue trains are properly staffed and correctly reports and records any discrepancies. 4. Conducts and records rules compliance tests n train and yard crews; submits reports in a timely manner. 5. Supervises Mechanical Department personnel within the yard, when needed. 6. Communicates with various external groups such as towers, control centers, and Personnel Assignment Office via telephone, radio, computer, facsimile and other devices. 7. Communicates with train and yard crews via radio. 8. Works in conjunction with other yards to ensure adequate numbers of cars are properly dispersed per established consist requirements. 9. Investigates personal injuries and may investigate customer complaints. 10. Conducts periodic yard equipment inspections. 11. Records on-time arrival of RRD train crew member personnel and makes reports of late personnel to PAO. 12. Analyzes on time performance of trains entering and departing yard for improvements. 13. Analyzes crew staffing and equipment utilization requirements and reports suggestions. 14. Utilizes Computerized Train Arriva/Departure software (ATDS) and maintains corresponding qualifications. 15. Works in conjunction with other departments such as Electric Traction to ensure safe movements of trains in the yards while under plate orders. 16. Records and reports train delays both in and out of yard limits. May re-mediate problems by investigation, discipline and/or other means. 17. Performs other duties as required/assigned. 18. Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE - High school diploma or GED equivalent required plus three (3) years' experience as locomotive engineer, conductor, tower operator, or other related transportation/maintenance experience required. - Must be qualified on NORAC Book of Rules. - Must be proficient in basic rules of the railroad as it pertains to yard movements. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. - Valid current divers license required.
