Rail Transit Supervisors are an integral part of the organization, overseeing Metro Transit's Light Rail Operations from the Rail Control Center (RCC). They are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Light Rail system through monitoring and directing rail movement from the RCC. Rail Transit Supervisors are also responsible for field supervision of Rail Operations and Facilities including station platforms, station structures, and equipment. Rail Transit Supervisors are expected to follow and enforce all company policies, procedures, rules, and guidelines.

NOTE: This posting will create an eight (8) month eligible list for current and future positions. This position will work onsite at the Rail Control Center or will be traveling in the rail operations field. Hours will vary with the requirement to work weekends and holidays. The candidate's permanent residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin.
What you would do in this job

• Oversees the day-to-day activities and operations for an assigned portion of both mainline and yard territories with a focus on safety and on-time performance.
• Monitors, addresses, and thoroughly documents operator performance, on-time rail performance, service delays, emergencies, and facility concerns.
• Reacts quickly and utilizes appropriate personnel, both internal and external, to come to a safe and efficient resolution of all special events, service disruptions, and emergencies.
• Coordinates with LRT Vehicle and Systems Maintenance to ensure that equipment is available to provide uninterrupted revenue service at all times.
• Coordinates with internal and external stakeholders to ensure planned and unplanned maintenance activities are safely executed.
• 80% of time is spent in a control center setting utilizing highly technical computer software to monitor and control train movement while communicating via 800mhz radio systems.
• 20% of time is spent working outside in a field support role, regardless of weather conditions.
• Works in a team-centered technical environment; to be successful in the position, individuals must be capable of high mental concentration, work well under stress, and have a strong multi-tasking ability.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Any of the following combinations of experience in transit, transportation, operations, emergency services, fast paced or high-pressure environments or closely related field and completed educational degree in Business Administration, Transportation, or closely related field with one (1) year of verifiable lead or supervisory experience:

• High school diploma/GED with seven (7) years of experience including one (1) year of verifiable lead or supervisory experience.
• Associate degree with five (5) years of experience including one (1) year of verifiable lead or supervisory experience.
• Bachelor's degree or higher with three (3) years of experience including one (1) year of verifiable lead or supervisory experience.

• Experience working in a Control or Dispatch center.

• Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

Metropolitan Council Employees Only: Successful completion of any one of the following four Metropolitan Council Leadership/Supervisory training programs will substitute for lead/supervisory experience. You must attach your certificate(s) as proof of completion of the program to your application. Only completion of one of the four programs listed below will substitute credit (6 months or 1 year) for lead/supervisory experience.

Metro Transit Leadership Academy = 1 year
Project Management Development Program (12-month session) = 1 year
Project Management Development Program (6-month session) = 6 months
Four Learning Institute Certificates - You must obtain all four certificates listed below to receive credit for 6 months supervisory experience.

What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:

• Skilled in the use of computer applications and the ability to transfer data between software applications with multiple applications open simultaneously.
• Ability to efficiently document needed information through the use of keyboarding/typing.
• Ability to operate multi-channel Metropolitan Council radio systems.
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as safety rules, technical procedures, operating and maintenance manuals.

What your work environment will be:Work is performed in a call center/control center environment and in the field of rail operations. Requires conducting field inspections and off-site duties as required. Position has exposure to working near moving parts, fumes and airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions and vibration. Requires travel between primary work site to other sites. Must be flexible with the ability to work varying shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements:

• Walk and stand for up to 8 hours per day.
• Sit up to 8 hours per day.
• Climb in and out of rail cars at varying heights, up to 36".
• Kneels, squats, or bends up to 1 hour per day.
• Occasionally operate/throw various types of rail switches both mainline and yard.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Reach with hands and arms frequently below chest height and occasionally overhead.
• Able to speak clearly and concisely and be able to hear normal conversations, radio transmissions, telephone conversations, and ring tones.
• Must have adequate vision for reading documents and manuals and required computer work.
• Must be able to pass a mandatory D.O.T. physical with a color vision test, and a light rail "physical agility" test.
• Must pass Metropolitan Council alcohol/drug screen testing as outlined in Metropolitan Council policy #4-9-1, Drug Free Workplace.
• Ability to wear required safety equipment, including footwear, vest, protective eyewear and safety helmet.
