About the roleYou will establish and lead Aalo's site Radiological Control (RadCon) program from the ground up for our advanced modular reactor operations supporting data center power. This hybrid manager/engineer role mixes program ownership with hands-on radiological engineering-standing up the RadCon program, designing the monitoring architecture, and driving licensing/compliance readiness alongside Operations.
What you'll doProgram build & ownership- Stand up and own the RadCon program (policies, procedures, training, metrics) aligned to ALARA and applicable regulations/standards.
- Define the RadCon organizational model for an early-stage facility; plan headcount, vendor support strategy, and budget for instrumentation, dosimetry, and calibration.
- Author and maintain procedures (surveys, RWPs, source/radioactive material control, contamination control, effluents, instrument control), and deliver training for operators/maintainers.
- Implement a performance-based ALARA program with KPIs and regular management reviews.
Engineering & monitoring architecture- Develop the technical basis for detector selection, placement, and setpoints across a balanced monitoring program (area/process and stack/effluent; portals as needed) including shielding and background considerations.
- Specify, procure, and accept radiation monitoring systems and dosimetry; lead FAT/SAT and integrate with plant data systems for real-time dashboards and trending.
- Establish calibration/maintenance plans, alarm logic, and failure-response procedures.
- Plan and oversee baseline facility radiological surveys and mapping.
Licensing & compliance readiness- Build the traceability between regulatory/standard requirements and program artifacts; maintain an auditable evidence trail.
- Prepare for inspections/audits; run internal readiness assessments and corrective action tracking.
- Partner with Regulatory/Product Safety on licensing deliverables and inputs to safety analyses and emergency planning.
Operations support & leadership- Provide day-to-day RadCon engineering support to work planning, RWPs, contamination controls, and outage/commissioning activities as applicable.
- Lead incident/abnormal condition response, cause analysis, and program improvements.
- Mentor early-career staff; manage vendors and service providers.
QualificationsRequired- BS in Nuclear Engineering, Health Physics, Radiological Engineering, or closely related field.
- 5-7 years of relevant RadCon/RP experience with program ownership or build-out responsibilities.
- Demonstrated experience establishing or significantly upgrading a RadCon program in a nuclear or high-rigor environment (e.g., power, research reactor, DOE/NNSA, industrial/medical with equivalent controls).
- Hands-on expertise with radiation monitoring systems: detector selection/placement, calibration, setpoint methodology, and data management.
- Strong command of ALARA program implementation, procedure development, radiological survey methods, and records management.
- Proven preparation for inspections/audits and leading compliance readiness activities.
- Excellent technical writing, training delivery, and cross-functional communication.
- On-site role in Idaho Falls with occasional travel for vendors/partners as needed.
Preferred- Prior RSO responsibility preferred.
- Experience with effluent/stack monitoring systems and environmental monitoring programs.
- Familiarity with relevant standards and regulatory frameworks (e.g., NRC/DOE regulations; ANSI/ANS N13 series) and with integrating monitoring into plant data systems.
- Experience with shielding and dose assessment methods and with data analysis for trending and KPIs.
- Early-stage/commissioning environment experience and small team leadership.
Physical- Ability to perform fieldwork in industrial settings (climb ladders/stairs, don PPE) and lift/carry up to 30 lbs occasionally.
Requirements: - Based in the United States
- Willing to work on-site in Idaho Falls, ID
