Radiobiologist to support cutting-edge research focused on the biological effects of ionizing radiation.
What you will be doing!- Actively contributing to short- and long-term planning of the health program portfolio, influencing the Directorate and Company's strategic technical direction in the field of Radiobiology and low-dose research as they pertain to health risks from occupational and environmental radiation exposures, utilization of medical radionuclides for medical therapy or diagnostics, and development of radio-mitigation strategies.
- Managing research projects within the Federal Nuclear Science and Technology (FNST) Health Portfolio, scheduling and coordinating research activities, and interacting with staff and management.
- Attending and delivering oral presentations at technical meetings, workshops, conferences, and business intake meetings representing the company on scientific and technological issues nationally and internationally.
- Conducting and planning practical experiments and optimizing equipment and software programs to support and advance research projects in the area of radiobiology and low-dose research and support the establishment of new capabilities.
- Conducting and planning experiments under controlled conditions and optimizing equipment to support the development of protocols for the generation of different types of human organoids (lung, kidney, liver, etc.) as well as to characterize their cellular and molecular structure.
- Contributing to and supporting the development of an organoid repository for internal and external users as part of the CNL Tissue Bank project.
- Designing, planning, and executing experimental plans to investigate the effects of low- and high-LET radiation on cellular signaling using dedicated laboratories (BSL-2 radiological and non-radiological classed), and through the use of irradiation facilities.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:- Education
- A Ph.D. in a biology/biochemistry discipline, from a university of recognized standing.
- Postdoctoral experience in one or more of the following fields (in order of priority) is preferred, but not required: molecular biology, cell biology, and radiobiology.
- Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant cellular and molecular biology experience.
- Two (2) years of supervisory experience leading or supervising a team of technical professionals is preferred.
- Experience in cell signaling and mRNA translation research, CRISPR/Cas9 and cellular signaling analysis, RNA sequence analysis, real-time qPCR, genome-wide analysis, primary cultures of human-derived cells, and other techniques to identify mechanisms of radiation damage.
- Practical experience in the development of in vitro models.
- Prior Experience in cellular and molecular biology methods in cellular signaling
- Experience in gene expression, Translatomic, proteomics studies and knowledge in radiation biology.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrated skills in setting appropriate personal, unit, departmental, divisional, or organizational priorities and directions, and individual and team performance measurement and evaluation skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to influence or educate various audiences (e.g., Sr. Management or Executive level reporting/presentations, vendors, community stakeholders, business unit managers, committee members, and other external conferences, meetings, workshops).
- High level of proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience with statistical analysis software such as SAS is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with radiobiology and in vivo studies.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."
Working Conditions:- Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
- Enrollment as a Nuclear Energy Worker, working in biological laboratories and Class C Radiological Laboratories, with potential handling and working with samples, contaminated with BSL2 pathogens.
- This position is part of the CRPEG Union and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in the CRPEG Collective Agreement.
