Position Description
Salary Information:
The salary for this position is negotiated through a collective bargaining agreement. All new employees will be hired at the minimum salary in the range and will be eligible for merit increases until reaching the maximum salary in the range.
Definition

Incumbents are responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and support of the radio systems and related computer and network systems. Incumbents also generate, analyze, and interpret data related to radio systems performance, usage, utilization, coverage and generate reports to support operational decisions and improvements in radio communications for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. This role is an Information Technologies based position that also focuses on auditing and/or modifying the radio, encryption, and asset management databases to ensure the radios and radio systems data is current, accurate, and up to date with ongoing departmental bureau, section, and/or personnel changes

Minimum Qualifications/Position-Specific Conditions
Training, Education and Experience

Experience:

Three years of experience in supporting or maintaining network communication systems, preferably in a radio or telecommunications environment, including network hardware, firewalls, cabling, networking transport protocols, and network monitoring system software;

or

Three years of experience in supporting or maintaining radio or telecommunications server infrastructure including server hardware, network devices, storage arrays, cloud services, messaging systems, directory administration and user application software.

Training:

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, cybersecurity, computer programming, networking, information technologies, telecommunications, or a closely related field;

or

An equivalent combination of education and experience in either supporting or maintaining network communication systems, preferably in a radio or telecommunications environment, including network hardware, firewalls, cabling, networking transport protocols, and network monitoring system software; or experience in supporting or maintaining radio or telecommunications server infrastructure including server hardware, network devices, storage arrays, cloud services, messaging systems, directory administration and user application software.

Licenses:
1. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, appropriate Nevada driver license.
2. Possession of any of the following certifications is desirable: any Data Analytics certifications, certifications obtained through the Microsoft Certified Professional Program, Cisco or Juniper Networks certification programs, Certified Information Systems Security Professional, or any other approved professional information technology certification.

3. Possession of an FCC GROL and/or Technician-Class or higher Amateur Radio License certifications is desirable.
Best Candidates Will
  • Possess a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or information technology
  • Have Networking certification(s) (CCNA, JNCIA, ENCA, etc.)
  • Have experience with troubleshooting, installing, and repairing radio systems applications and radio systems networks, preferably in a public safety or military environment
  • Possess an FCC issued GROL and/or technician class (or higher) amateur radio license
  • Have experience with troubleshooting, repairing, and/or programming Land Mobile Radios
  • Have experience installing and maintaining wide and/or local area network systems
  • Have experience with Microsoft Server Operating Systems and software
  • Have experience and/or familiarity with VMWare or other virtual operating systems
  • Possess Microsoft Certified Professional certifications and/or CompTia Network+
  • Be able to work and collaborate in a team environment while fostering and maintaining positive working relationships
  • Have experience leading a team in technical and functional tasks
  • Have leadership experience including mentoring others, embracing feedback, and contributing to continuous improvement for self and others
  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills

Conditions of Employment

In addition to the General Conditions of Employment, found , the following specific conditions of employment and physical conditions apply to this position.
  1. Personal Appearance: While on duty, and/or representing the Department, uniformed or otherwise, all Department employees will be neat and clean in their appearance in public. Employees are prohibited from attaching, affixing, or displaying objects, articles or jewelry on or through the nose, tongue, eyebrow or other exposed body part, except the ears for females, while on duty. Employees are prohibited from stretching or "gauging" their earlobes. All jewelry implants will not be exposed or visible while on duty. Tattoos or branding will not be exposed or visible while on duty and/or representing the Department. Such markings must be covered by clothing. Markings that cannot be covered by clothing will be covered using neutral-toned bandages or patches except for hands, neck, head, or face tattoos. Makeup is not permissible to cover a tattoo. Tattoos or branding anywhere on the body that promote racism/discrimination, indecency, extremist or supremacist philosophies, lawlessness, violence, or contain sexually explicit material are prohibited.
  2. Participate in the LVMPD Mental Wellness Program.
  3. Obtain and maintain a valid FCC General Radio Telephone Operator License or FCC Technician-Class Amateur Radio License within 12 months from date of hire.
  4. Subject to callout on a 24-hour basis, which requires the employee to live within the jurisdiction of LVMPD, i.e. a 25 mile radius starting at Sahara and Valley View Blvd.
  5. Maintain a valid, appropriate Nevada driver license.
  6. Vision sufficient to read computer screens, as well as fine print on documents.
  7. Hearing sufficient to hear conversations and directions in person and over the telephone.
  8. Dexterity and mobility sufficient to work in an office, use standard office equipment, drive a motor vehicle to visit various Department offices, and if assigned, conduct travel both in state and out of state.
  9. Strength sufficient to lift and carry light items, such as stacks of files.
  10. Endurance sufficient to sit or stand for long periods of time, as necessary.

Additional Selection Processes
If you successfully complete the above selection process, you will undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph exam. A polygraph examination can be stressful and may affect existing medical or psychological conditions or ongoing treatment. The background investigation takes approximately 90 to 120 days to complete. You must also meet the LVMPD Hiring Standards.
