What You Will Do

R&D Engineer 2 ($106,400 - $176,000)

As an R&D Engineer 2 you will:
  • Support the Weapons Production Directorate by ensuring quality assurance results, materials, processes and final products meet design specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
  • Apply statistical process control methods to identify correct measurement methods, tools, and/or systems; identify data-collection points; and analyze data in order to identify failure modes, track trends, focus on improvement actions, rate performance and measure effectiveness.
  • Define, identify and apply product and process control methods such as developing control plans, identifying critical control points, developing and validating work instructions.

R&D Engineer 3 ($128,000 - $215,900)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer 3 will:
  • Define/identify technical and performance specifications.
  • Develop new technical capabilities and creates opportunities to extend R&D engineering through the expansion of existing efforts.
  • Lead the development of technical products such as journal papers, reports, presentations, and concept papers,
  • Influence organizational, project, and program strategies and directions.
  • Lead technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives.
  • Use project assignments to further organizational goals. Develops and implements project management plans, including scope, schedule, and budget, for small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Defines deliverables at the project or major task level.

What You Need

Minimum Requirements

Engineering:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in engineering disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, nuclear, chemical, or industrial.

Inspection Design:
  • Ability to interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings and schematics; familiarity with ASME Y14.5M standard.

Manufacturing:
  • Experience working in the manufacturing sector.

In addition to having advanced knowledge of the R&D Engineer 2 requirements, the R&D Engineer 3 must have the following:

Technical knowledge:
  • Thorough knowledge to conceptualize and communicate major elements of development and production to both technical and non-technical personnel.

Project Support:
  • Adept at supporting several concurrent projects in a challenging safety and/or security setting.

Education/Experience R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience R&D Engineer 3: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Required: Must be able to acquire and maintain all required certifications and training related to work within Plutonium Facility such as Q Clearance, Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification, Glove box operator, Fissile Material Handler, etc.

DOE Order 426.2A: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in science or engineering or related science, 2 years of job-related experience and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of 10 CFR 830 with experience in nuclear processing and/or high hazard facility operating requirements, safety/authorization basis and/or Conduct of Operations planning and execution.
  • Experience with startup activities associated with bringing new processes online in the PF-4 facility. Experience communicating with management on project and equipment status.
  • Knowledge and/ or experience working with Nuclear Material
  • Experience working with classified material and parts
  • Active DOE "Q" clearance (or similar)
  • HRP


Work Schedule: This position mayrequire 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for the shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
