OverviewWe are seeking a highly skilled and committed Software Engineer to join our team. This role is central to advancing our quantum software roadmap and requires passion in software development, cloud, AI, and quantum computing.
This role is part of a team building the shared infrastructure that powers Microsoft's quantum computing platform. Microsoft is advancing multiple quantum hardware technologies, including neutral atom and topological qubit systems, and this team develops the foundational software, services, and tooling that enable other engineering teams to build, test, deploy, and operate quantum systems at scale. Working closely with software engineers, hardware designers, and experimental physicists, you will help transform research breakthroughs into robust production capabilities. Responsibilities span software, firmware, and hardware-adjacent systems, with opportunities to influence the future architecture of Microsoft's fault-tolerant quantum computing stack.
Responsibilities- Design and implement Microsoft Quantum software and firmware subsystems for quantum hardware.
- Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a set of features.
- Contributes to the identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product area with little oversight.
- Contributes to efforts to break down larger work items into smaller work items and provides estimation.
- Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) working on-call to monitor system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions and gains approval to restore system/product/service for simple problems.
- Remains current in skills by investing time and effort into staying abreast of current developments that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.

QualificationsRequired/Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 1+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.

Preferred qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Physical Sciences, or related field
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Physical Sciences, or related field AND 2+ years software industry experience, including research and/or development of commercial software, compilers, scientific computing applications, or multi-component systems
- OR equivalent experience.
- Experience in coding languages C, C++, C#, Java or Rust
- Self-motivated with an ability to succeed in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment.
- Experience administering and developing on Windows.
- Experience working with various telemetry and data visualization systems.
- Demonstrated ability to identify problem areas, drive issues to closure and ensure solid root cause understanding.
- Capable of technical deep dives into software architectures, designs, implementations and troubleshooting issues.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with a solid understanding of software development and testing practices.

Quantum Software Engineering IC2 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $85,400 - $168,100 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $111,100 - $183,700 per year.
