What you’ll be doing

As a Quantum Machine Learning Research Scientist, you will play a key individual contributor role within CIBC’s Advanced Analytics and AI team, driving the development and application of quantum computing capabilities across the bank. You will lead applied research initiatives focused on designing, executing, and evaluating quantum algorithms, working closely with researchers, engineers, and business stakeholders to explore real-world use cases in areas such as fraud, cybersecurity, and optimization. You will contribute to advancing quantum research while translating complex concepts into practical insights, helping shape how emerging technologies can be leveraged within a banking environment. This role requires a strong balance of technical depth, hands-on experimentation, and the ability to communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.

How you’ll succeed

  • Applied Research & Experimentation – Design, implement, and execute quantum computing experiments and proof-of-concepts, translating theoretical research into practical, testable outcomes aligned to business needs.
  • Quantum Expertise – Apply deep knowledge of quantum computing principles and algorithms to solve complex computational problems, with a focus on real-world applicability within financial services.
  • Collaboration & Influence – Work closely with AI researchers, machine learning engineers, developers, and domain experts across business units (e.g., fraud, cybersecurity) to co-develop and evaluate innovative solutions.
  • Communication & Translation – Clearly articulate complex quantum concepts and research findings to a broad audience, including senior leadership, enabling informed decision-making.
  • Innovation Mindset – Stay current with advancements in quantum computing and contribute to original research while identifying opportunities to apply emerging capabilities within the organization.

Who you are

  • You can demonstrate knowledge and experience in. quantum computing. You bring strong expertise in quantum computing concepts, algorithms, and programming frameworks, with hands-on experience in designing and executing experiments. You have experience translating theoretical research into practical experimentation or real-world applications, ideally within industry or applied research settings. You are proficient in programming and comfortable working with tools and frameworks such as Python, Qiskit, Cirq, Ocean, or Q#, and can collaborate effectively with engineering teams to execute experiments. You understand machine learning concepts and have a working knowledge of machine learning principles and can articulate how they intersect with quantum computing.
  • You have a PhD in. physics, computer science, mathematics, or a related field, with a focus on quantum computing or closely related disciplines.
