The Quality Engineer II - Mainframe is a hands-on role accountable for leading comprehensive end-to-end quality engineering activities for assigned medium-to-high-complexity initiatives. The role develops and executes test strategies and plans, validates mainframe batch and online processing, maximizes appropriate automation, manages quality risks and defects, and provides an evidence-based quality recommendation for release readiness.
Delivery Accountabilities- Own the quality engineering approach, detailed planning, estimates, coverage, execution oversight and quality outcomes for assigned mainframe initiatives of medium-to-high complexity.
- Review business requirements, solution designs, technical specifications and data mappings; identify testability gaps, dependencies and risks early in delivery.
- Design and execute end-to-end functional, system, integration, regression, negative, batch, online and implementation-readiness testing across mainframe and connected distributed or API channels.
- Validate COBOL processing, JCL and procedures, IMS transactions, DB2 and IMS data, VSAM and sequential files, reports, interfaces and downstream outputs.
- Prepare and control test data; perform pre- and post-execution data validation through SQL, file comparisons, job output and reconciliation checks.
- Submit and monitor batch jobs, review return codes, spool output and system logs, and investigate common abends or processing failures using TSO/ISPF and SDSF or equivalent tools.
- Develop, maintain and execute resilient automated regression tests; integrate suitable tests into CI/CD/continuous testing pipelines and promote reusable test assets.
- Apply risk-based, shift-left, BDD/TDD and defect-prevention practices; validate user stories, acceptance criteria, Definition of Ready and Definition of Done with delivery partners.
- Lead defect triage for assigned scope, provide clear evidence and diagnostic details, coordinate retesting, and drive priority defects to timely closure.
- Assess test evidence, residual risks and entry/exit criteria; provide clear quality status and an evidence-based release-readiness recommendation to stakeholders.
- Coordinate test environments, dependencies and data needs across development, business analysis, operations, release, vendor and partner teams.
Risk Accountabilities- Apply enterprise quality engineering frameworks, software delivery controls, security requirements and regulatory expectations within assigned scope.
- Maintain traceability from requirements to test cases, automated tests, execution results, defects and readiness evidence.
- Identify, document, manage and escalate quality, operational, data, environment and implementation risks, including non-standard or high-risk activities.
- Use quality metrics and trend analysis to evaluate coverage, defect health, automation effectiveness and release readiness; communicate concise, decision-oriented reporting.
- Conduct reviews of test strategies, scenarios, scripts and evidence to confirm completeness, reusability, maintainability and compliance.
- Protect customer and Bank information by following access, test-data masking, segregation-of-duties and evidence-retention requirements.
- Improve delivery efficiency by eliminating redundant testing, increasing automation, strengthening reusable assets and addressing recurring defect patterns.
- Support implementation validation and post-implementation checks to confirm processing integrity and production stability.
Team Accountabilities- Work as a collaborative member and quality advocate within the assigned delivery team, communicating progress, decisions, risks and issues promptly.
- Provide technical direction within assigned scope and coach junior or intermediate quality engineers on mainframe testing, automation, defect analysis and engineering practices.
- Partner effectively with software engineers, business systems analysts, product, operations, release teams and external partners to resolve issues and achieve quality outcomes.
- Share reusable test assets, lessons learned and mainframe domain knowledge; contribute actively to communities of practice and continuous improvement.
- Work autonomously on complex testing and analysis while knowing when to escalate cross-team, high-risk or unresolved concerns.
- Contribute to a fair, positive, inclusive and high-performing environment that promotes quality, innovation, teamwork and continuous learning.
- Act as a brand ambassador for the business area and the Bank, internally and externally.
- Advanced knowledge of quality engineering principles, the software testing life cycle, Agile delivery and risk-based testing.
- Hands-on mainframe testing experience with z/OS, TSO/ISPF, JCL, COBOL, DB2 and batch processing; experience with IMS, VSAM and sequential files is strongly preferred.
- Ability to understand mainframe program flow, copybooks, file layouts, job dependencies, database updates and interfaces sufficiently to design effective tests and diagnose failures.
- Advanced SQL and data-validation skills, including joins, reconciliation and verification of inserts, updates, extracts and downstream outputs.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, including job-log, spool, return-code and abend analysis, with clear evidence provided to development teams.
- Demonstrated ability to perform complex testing autonomously and lead quality delivery across one product line or multiple delivery teams within assigned scope.
- Strong experience building or maintaining automated tests and applying source control, DevOps, service virtualization, test-data management and CI/CD/continuous testing practices.
- Ability to define measurable coverage, quality metrics, exit criteria and release-readiness recommendations.
- Strong written and verbal communication, stakeholder management, planning and prioritization skills.
- Future-focused approach that identifies delivery gaps, recurring risks and practical opportunities to improve quality, speed and reliability.
- Reports to a Quality Engineering Practice Lead or designated people leader.
Experience and Education- Undergraduate degree or technical certificate in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Typically 5-7 years of relevant quality engineering or software testing experience, including substantial hands-on mainframe application testing.
- Demonstrated experience owning test strategy and delivery for medium-to-high-complexity initiatives.
- Experience in financial services, payment or credit-card processing, or another high-volume regulated environment is an asset.
- Experience with API or distributed-channel testing and modern mainframe automation tooling is an asset.
