The Quality Engineer (Composites) is responsible for the evaluation of damages on composite components, including nacelles, thrust reversers, flight control surfaces, and radomes. This position plays a key role as liaison between Engineering and Production and monitors composite bonding processes and procedures in order to improve efficiency while maintaining the highest level of quality. The Quality Engineer will assist with repair plans, perform in process and post repair quality verification, collaborate with other engineers, and work with the Quality Control department and the production teams to ensure FAA compliance and airworthiness.
Key Responsibilities include:- Evaluate damaged aircraft composite structures and determine repair solutions
- Work with OEM and/or FAA approved data to develop and implement repair plans
- Train and Mentor new technicians in composite repair processes
- Read and Interpret OEM manuals, engineering drawings, and engineering repair instructions
- Lead root cause analysis and failure investigations
- Support continuous improvement and assist in developing new repair processes and procedures
- Must be able to manage different projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines
- Assist in bond tooling development
Skills / Education and Experience- Minimum of 5 years of experience, directly performing composite repairs on Aerospace related products, A&P certificate or Mechanical Engineering background is a plus, but not necessary if experience is sufficient
- Full understanding of the autoclave and vacuum curing prosses
- Must be able to read, speak, and write in English
- Knowledge on FAA regulations required
- Experience working with OEM manuals
- Understanding of composite materials, ply layup orientation, proper vacuum and bagging processes, and repair design principles
- Knowledge of wet lay-up and pre-preg repair methods required
- Must have strong problem solving and communication skills
Physical Demands- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
- Must be able to lift up to 30lbs
- Capability of working in a shop environment with moderate noise levels and exposure to mechanical equipment
