Meet the Team:You will be working with Torc's map enablement team to review and conduct quality control work on high-definition map datasets used by Torc's autonomous trucks. This role is responsible for auditing HD map geospatial datasets (lane geometry, road boundaries, signage, and other map features derived from LiDAR point clouds and sensor data) to ensure it meets the accuracy and completeness standards required for safe autonomous operation on highways and surface streets. You'll work closely with mapping engineers, mapping vendors, and autonomy teams to catch defects before they reach the vehicle, and to turn recurring issues into process and workflow improvements.
Torc's map enablement team is looking for a quality control engineer to help deliver and scale its mapping operation for Torc's commercial expansion. This individual will collaborate with engineering teams that use mapping datasets to create tailored QC workflows, turning feedback into optimized processes that scale as Torc's operational mapping footprint grows.
What You'll Do- Review HD map geospatial data (lane geometry, road boundaries, intersections, signage, lane connectivity) against internal quality specifications and ground-truth sources
- Perform QC on map features derived from LiDAR point clouds, aerial/satellite imagery, and vehicle-collected sensor data
- Identify, document, and triage map defects, escalating safety-critical issues to mapping and autonomy engineering teams
- Define and refine QC metrics, sampling strategies, and audit workflows to measure and improve map accuracy at scale
- Partner with mapping vendors and internal teams to communicate quality standards and drive defect resolution
- Analyze recurring defect patterns and feed findings back into upstream map creation and annotation processes to reduce future errors
- Maintain clear documentation of QC procedures, edge cases, and regional/route-specific map requirements
- Support readiness reviews for new lanes, corridors, or operational design domains (ODDs) prior to launch
What you'll need:- Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geomatics, Geography, Surveying, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 1-3 years of experience (QC Engineer I) or 3-5 years (QC Engineer II) in geospatial data QC, map production, GIS analysis, or a related quality/annotation role
- Experience working with geospatial data formats (e.g., shapefiles, GeoJSON, KML) and coordinate/projection systems
- Familiarity with GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and/or LiDAR/point cloud viewers
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify subtle spatial or geometric inconsistencies in large datasets
- Comfort working with large datasets and defining repeatable, data-driven QC processes
- Clear written communication skills for documenting defects and QC standards for both technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, operations, and third-party vendor teams
Additional for QC Engineer II:
- Experience designing or improving QC processes/tooling from the ground up, not just executing existing checklists
- Track record of mentoring junior reviewers or leading vendor/annotator quality calibration
- Experience defining map quality metrics and reporting on trends to engineering stakeholders
Bonus Points:- HD mapping experience, particularly for autonomous vehicles or trucking
- Familiarity with map representations/standards used in autonomy stacks (e.g., Lanelet2, OpenDRIVE, OpenStreetMap)
- Experience with LiDAR point cloud processing/classification tools (e.g., TerraScan, TerraSolid, LP360)
- Scripting experience (Python or SQL) for automating QC checks or building spatial queries (e.g., PostGIS)
- Experience with highway/interstate corridor mapping specifically (relevant to trucking ODDs)
- Prior experience working with or managing outsourced/vendor annotation teams
- Familiarity with functional safety or quality standards relevant to AV development (e.g., ISO 26262, ASPICE)
