The expected hiring range for this position is:
$111,400.00-$146,600.00.

About the Role:
A Quality Engineering Specialist IV is sought to join Fermilab's Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) and Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Project team in Lead, South Dakota. The LBNF/DUNE Project is hosted by Fermilab in Batavia, IL, with participation from universities and laboratories around the world. The project includes construction of a beamline and near detector at Fermilab and a large underground detector at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota. LBNF/DUNE will design and construct one of the largest proposed neutrino experiments in the world over the next several years.

Under minimal supervision, the Quality Engineering Specialist IV independently plans, coordinates, and oversees all aspects of complex survey and layout activities on construction projects, ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with specifications, codes, and standards.]

What your day-to-day as a Quality Engineering Specialist IV at Fermilab will look like:
  • Leads project or department staff to interpret QA requirements, and to develop and implement QA procedures, systems, and programs. Leads QA program and process maintenance and development efforts with assigned department or project. May be assigned to supervise other QA staff.
  • Provides guidance and interpretation of complex QA matters and problems to facilitate compliance. Routinely interacts with department and project leads as well as members of the Senior Leadership on QA concerns.
  • Ensures Lab personnel possess appropriate skills and knowledge of QA procedures, as well as their compliance with QA requirements and procedures, DOE orders and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, requirements, and standards.
  • Assigns and facilitates incident reviews, project reviews, and investigations. Actively supports line organizations in facilitating the issue management process, including causal analyses and corrective action planning.
  • Performs QA document reviews from subcontractors, collaborating institutions, partners, and vendors/suppliers.
  • Manages issues and corrective actions through the Laboratory's issues tracking system.
  • Validates action closure and efficiency in addressing issues.
  • Prepares reports for management and DOE based on observations, data analysis, interpretation of regulations and Lab reporting procedures. Analyzes data and makes appropriate recommendations.
  • Supports the definition and management of QA documentation processes and procedures. Coordinates efforts to maintain quality-related documentation, tools, templates, and procedures.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of laboratory and DOE requirements. Trains - and may supervise - less experienced staff.
  • Reviews QA team's assessments of department and project staff implementation of QA procedures. Support causal analysis and formulation of corrective actions, as needed.
  • Develops and presents specialized training programs to staff and contractors.
  • Serves on Laboratory committees and ad hoc groups and may serve as committee or subcommittee chair. Helps develop Laboratory QA processes through active participation in such groups.
  • Role may require an estimated 15% domestic travel to other DOE laboratory sites, partner/collaborating institutions, or vendors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor


Skills and Attributes for Success:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Business Management, Quality Management, or relevant field, with 10+ years of experience in quality assurance and quality control or a Master's Degree in Engineering, Business Management,
  • Quality Management, or relevant field, with 7+ years of experience in quality assurance and quality control. American Society for Quality (ASQ) or other appropriate certifications a plus.
  • Supervisory experience desirable


Work Arrangement:
Onsite - This role is based full-time at the LBNF-DUNE site in Lead, South Dakota.
