The
Steel Quality Assurance Manager is responsible for developing, managing, and enforcing F.A. Wilhelm Construction's Quality Assurance Program as it relates to structural and miscellaneous steel. This position works closely with project teams, fabricators, erectors, inspectors, and trade partners to identify potential quality concerns and implement solutions before they result in rework, schedule impacts, or a deficient final product.
By applying technical knowledge and field experience, the Steel Quality Assurance Manager ensures steel fabrication and erection activities meet project specifications, applicable codes, and the quality standards of F.A. Wilhelm Construction and our clients.
Essential Functions- Develop, implement, and continuously improve project-specific Quality Assurance plans for structural and miscellaneous steel.
- Review structural drawings, specifications, shop drawings, erection plans, submittals, and inspection requirements.
- Monitor steel fabrication and erection activities for compliance with project requirements and applicable AISC, AWS, and RCSC standards.
- Coordinate required inspections and testing for welding, bolting, materials, coatings, decking, and other steel-related work.
- Perform jobsite audits and inspections, document nonconforming work, and ensure corrective actions are completed.
- Partner with project teams, fabricators, erectors, engineers, and third-party inspectors to address technical questions and resolve quality concerns.
- Verify that inspection reports, material certifications, welding qualifications, testing results, and other required quality records are complete.
- Support preconstruction and preinstallation planning, including scope reviews, constructability discussions, code research, and troubleshooting.
- Train project personnel on steel quality requirements and communicate recurring concerns, lessons learned, and process improvements.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Company Management.
Education and Experience Requirements- Minimum of five years of quality assurance, quality control, inspection, fabrication, erection, or construction experience involving structural steel.
- Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent relevant experience will also be considered.
- Minimum OSHA 10-Hour certification.
- Certified Welding Inspector certification is preferred but not required.
- Experience working with third-party inspectors, testing agencies, structural engineers, steel fabricators, and erection contractors is preferred.
Skills and Knowledge- Thorough knowledge of structural and miscellaneous steel construction methods.
- Strong understanding of AISC fabrication and erection requirements.
- Familiarity with AWS welding standards and RCSC bolting requirements.
- Experience with the quality and inspection of structural steel, including welding, bolted connections, materials, coatings, and decking.
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, specifications, shop drawings, erection drawings, inspection reports, and contract documents.
- Knowledge of inspection and testing plans, nonconformance reporting, corrective actions, and quality closeout requirements.
- Ability to recognize potential quality concerns and work with project teams to develop practical solutions.
- Strong technical problem-solving skills and the judgment necessary to resolve difficult construction and contract-related issues.
- Thorough knowledge of OSHA standards and jobsite safety requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills with close attention to detail.
- Ability to effectively train and support project personnel on quality-related requirements.

- Ability to use electronic inspection, documentation, and project management tools.
Physical Requirements- Ability to lift, move, push, pull, or carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to access and inspect steel work throughout active construction sites.
- Ability to climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and structural areas.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, including over uneven or unpaved ground.
- Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, work in confined spaces, and work at heights when required.
- Ability to see clearly, naturally or with correction, and coordinate the movement of the eyes, hands, and fingers.
Working ConditionsWork is performed in both office and active construction environments, including fabrication facilities and project jobsites. The position may require work at heights, underground, around active equipment, or in areas exposed to outdoor elements and changing weather conditions.
Employees may be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, fumes, airborne particles, electrical hazards, and moderate to very loud noise levels. All employees are expected to understand the hazards and safety requirements of each work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment in accordance with company safety policies.
