Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Summary

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive psychiatric and medical care to the Primary Health Solutions patient population in health center and school-based settings. This role evaluates and treats patients, supports continuity of care, provides patient and family education, collaborates with physicians and other members of the care team, and completes the clinical and administrative responsibilities necessary to provide high-quality patient care.

A Day in the Life

Provides primary medical care to the Primary Health Solutions patient population.

Consults with staff physicians in making decisions regarding patient care.

Evaluates and treats patients in health centers and school-based settings, providing continuity of patient care.

Provides nighttime, weekday, or some weekend and holiday call coverage as part of the work schedule.

Provides patient and family education and counseling.

May participate in training nurse practitioner students as requested.

Maintains complete medical records, including histories, physical examinations, and telephone message summaries.

Completes appropriate progress notes in each assigned work area and other special patient forms.

Completes appropriate correspondence, phone calls, and letters to patients and referring physicians.

Checks laboratory reports and correspondence within 24 to 48 hours of receipt and acts on abnormal laboratory results immediately upon arrival.

Participates in health collaborative and health improvement activities.

Carries out medical administrative functions necessary for quality patient care and compliance with accreditation requirements.

Participates in committee activities and chart reviews and may participate in Quality Improvement and Risk Management activities and committee work in assigned areas.

Attends Department/Center meetings as assigned.

Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

Education/Experience

Master of Science degree in Nursing and graduation from an approved nurse practitioner program. Two years of experience working in psychiatric/mental health with indigent populations and community-based programs is preferred. Experience as a provider or in a similar role is required.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

Working knowledge of NextGen or other EHR/EMR systems. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have the ability to gain knowledge of the current practice management system, electronic medical record, Microsoft Word, text paging, Internet, and Intranet.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must have graduated from an approved nurse practitioner program.
