Job Summary
The Laboratory of Dr. Calvin Roskelley is currently seeking to hire a Project Manager at the University of British Columbia (UBC) on the Vancouver campus. The successful candidate will provide the technical expertise required for the research projects and will be responsible for managing and coordinating glycoproteomic, anti-tumor group projects for multiple laboratories located at the Life Science Institute (Roskelley laboratory), School of Biomedical Engineering (McNagny laboratory), Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Wisnovsky laboratory) and the BC Cancer Research Centre (Huntsman and Kuchenbauer laboratories). The successful candidate will be also responsible for training and supervision of users and management of research projects. 

Organizational Status
The incumbent will report to the chair of the group, Dr. Roskelley, and must work with faculty, staff and students at multiple sites on a daily basis, both in-person and virtually. 

Work Performed
Major responsibilities of the position include:  

  • Developing, implementing and managing projects involving glycoproteomic screening and modification, antibody and antibody-drug conjugate development, and preclinical therapeutic testing, including designing proposals, protocols, work plans, and timelines. 
  • Responsible for providing guidance, establishing work priorities, and setting timelines for all research projects and personnel to ensure efficient planning and execution. 
  • Managing research activities, including planning, facilitating, communicating, and overseeing implementation. 
  • Overall protocol development, including adapting published protocols and developing new protocols for all aspects of the glycoproteomic, anti-tumor therapeutic workflow including sample preparation, pre-clinical testing and data analysis. 
  • Planning and managing financial resources for the projects, including project budgets, operating and research accounts, subject to final approval by the chair of the group, Dr. Roskelley, and other PI's. 
  • Exploring and securing different funding options and developing funding and grant proposals in consultation with the chair of the group, Dr. Roskelley, and other PI's. 
  • Leading and supervising research activities, including data management, analysis, interpretation, and preparation of manuscripts for publication. 
  • Guiding and supervising complex literature searches and reviews, and overseeing timely and accurate updates of website content and project information. 
  • Authorizing and reviewing high value purchases and expenditures. 
  • Providing technical expertise including method development, troubleshooting and maintaining equipment. 
  • Overseeing and managing smooth execution of laboratory logistics, including supplies, record-keeping, and proper handling of irreplaceable samples in coordination with senior management and clinical collaborators of the group. 
  • Training and supervising staff and students and ensuring appropriate training for collaborators. 
  • Initiating and managing training programs, policies and guidelines. 
  • Preparing reports, statistics, and graphic presentations for the funders or for journals/publications. 
  • Performing other related duties. 

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Consequence of errors could result in damage to sensitive scientific equipment, incorrect data and/or delays in projects, which might affect the experiments or results of others in the group, or lead to major delays in publishing, loss of grant funding, or delays in therapeutic development. 

Supervision Received
Works independently, checking with chair of the group, Dr. Roskelley, and other PI's when necessary. 

Supervision Given
Demonstrates how to operate highly technical equipment and procedures to students and staff. Supervises technical staff and students on the implementation of new methods. 

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • University degree in cell biology, immunology and/or related fields. 
  • Five years of experience in a research environment including demonstrated training and supervisory experience is preferred.  
  • Detailed knowledge of and demonstrated experience with glycoproteomics, antibody and antibody-drug conjugate development, and pre-clinical anti-tumor therapeutic testing is essential.  
  • Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting instrumentation is essential.  
  • Demonstrated ability to improve and implement methods in a modern laboratory.  
  • Experience using and troubleshooting common bioinformatics and microscopic imaging software platforms (for glycoproteomic analysis and pre-clinical assay assessment) required  
  • Teaching, training, presentation and technical writing experience required 
  • Effective oral and written communication, presentation, conflict resolution, problem-solving, program planning, facilitation, management, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills required  
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines 
  • Ability to exercise initiative, judgement, tact and confidentiality; ability to problem solve; ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail 
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
