Project Geotechnical Engineer

Delve Underground has an immediate opening for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our Vancouver, BC office team. This position is suited to a motivated, detail-oriented, team-centric engineer with 5 to 10 years of relevant experience who is ready to contribute to challenging heavy civil, tunnelling, trenchless, underground infrastructure, water, wastewater, and energy projects across Western Canada and beyond.

The successful candidate will support the delivery of geotechnical and underground design assignments from early-stage investigation and data review through design development, constructability review, construction support, and reporting. The role requires sound engineering judgement, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, clients, contractors, and technical specialists.

Responsibilities:
  • Review and compile existing historical information, including site investigation records, laboratory testing, mapping, instrumentation data, and previous design/construction documentation.
  • Plan, coordinate, and support geotechnical site investigations, including soil and rock logging, field testing, data management, and coordination with subcontractors and project teams.
  • Evaluate soil and rock conditions for design, including slope stability, reinforcement requirements, foundation conditions, excavation support, and hard rock tunnel failure mechanisms and stabilization needs.
  • Assist with the preparation of design criteria reports, geotechnical data reports, geotechnical interpretive reports, design memoranda, specifications, and construction-phase technical documentation.
  • Carry out geotechnical analyses using appropriate software and engineering methods, including stability, support, foundation, tunnel, trenchless, and excavation-related assessments.
  • Evaluate construction methodologies for project components, including drill and blast, tunnel boring machine, trenchless technologies, excavations, shafts, and foundation construction.
  • Support structural and civil design interfaces, drawing development, design coordination, and constructability reviews for underground and heavy civil infrastructure.
  • Assist with construction-phase services, including field reviews, contractor submittal reviews, response to technical queries, and interpretation of instrumentation and monitoring data.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil, geological, or geotechnical engineering; a graduate degree in geotechnical engineering, geological engineering, rock mechanics, or a related field is considered an asset.
  • Five to ten years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience, preferably including heavy civil, tunnelling, trenchless, underground, slope, foundation, or construction support assignments.
  • Registered, or able to register, as a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist in British Columbia.
  • Strong working knowledge of both soil mechanics and rock mechanics, with practical experience applying geotechnical principles to design and construction problems.
  • Proficiency with standard geotechnical analysis software; experience with numerical modelling, Python, or other coding tools would be an excellent additional skill set.
  • Excellent technical writing, verbal communication, organization, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage concurrent tasks and contribute effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
