What You'll Be Doing

Job Scope: The Project Engineering Coordinator interacts with other disciplines such as safety, environmental, operations, process technicians, I&E technicians, engineers, designers, planners, coordinators, etc. to accomplish job activities. This position is accountable for meeting safety, environmental, and any other active policy/law applicable to the site as well as expectations with respect to the job dimensions.

Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
  • Coordinates capital project documentation.
    • Infrastructure, equipment and project files.
    • Engineering department procedures and site process safety information (P&ID's, interlocks sheets, PFD's, etc.).
  • Coordinates capital Projects within the Axis, Alabama site.
    • Insure that capital projects are developed and implemented according to established corporate procedures.
    • Negotiate with internal customers to define their needs, and provide written scope documents as needed in support of capital project or maintenance support activities.
  • Manage project team activities handled through in-house engineering resources.
  • Operates as a technical advisor on the project team.
  • Ensure accuracy of plans, quantities, and calculations.
  • Prepare estimates to support site Capital Project team. (conceptual - definitive)
  • Prepare Request for Quotations documents and works with site Procurement to bid capital work.
  • Procures capital project materials and services.
  • Assimilate bill of material for job-specific tasks, build a request for quote (RFQ), and work with the purchasing group to obtain best and final pricing.
  • Insures that all capital project forecasts are updated monthly in SAP, and is responsible for running monthly financial reports.
  • Maintains close communication to the Technical & Engineering Manager on project activities; and participates with the site management team in the capital-spending budget and decision-making process.
  • Interfaces with Corporate Engineering on incorporating new policies and/or procedures to the site as well as Value Improvement Practices (i.e. new estimating tools, software applications, etc.)
  • Leads capital projects following the established project development procedures and process (ASAP) as necessary.
  • Responsible for approving contractor timesheets and works with plant accountant to re-class billed hours to correct cost center or project WBS.
  • Comply with the HSEQ Policy.
  • Comply with Regulations, Legal and Internal Requirements as made known by the site and by the business unit (BU).
  • Comply with the rules of the specific location to which one is assigned as well as the rules set by the business unit (BU) and site.
  • Follow HES and Operating Discipline procedures and practices to ensure safe and efficient operation of assigned plant areas.
  • As required, initiates and participates in Root Cause Investigations.
  • Understands and executes Emergency Response procedures to mitigate unplanned events in the process.
  • Comply with all standard procedures and work instructions, aka SP, SOP, PWI, TM, to ensure productivity, quality assurance and cost effectiveness.
  • Review their work areas for potential losses and Report hazards to the direct supervisor.
  • Report Near Misses to the direct supervisor.
  • Report Incidents or Accidents to the direct supervisor.
  • Identify and communicate potential gains or possible improvements to the management system.


Ideal Background

Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or any related field with a minimum of 5 years' experience in chemical plants. Mechanical engineering degree preferred.

Certification: Professional Engineering and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) registration is highly preferred.

Experience: This position requires 5+ years of relevant experience in engineering and project management.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge/ experience with mechanical and structural design codes.
  • Occupational and process safety knowledge.
  • Proven working experience as a project engineer.
  • Superb knowledge of design and visualizations software (for example, AutoCAD)
  • Microsoft Office competence.
  • Familiar with OSHA regulations for design and project execution.
  • Familiar with project estimating- Ridgeline or Aspen in Plant Estimator software


Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time.
