What You'll Do:

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to play a crucial role in the design, installation, and optimization of machinery and equipment used in the extraction, processing, and transportation of aggregates (such as sand, gravel, crushed stone). Ensure operations are efficient, safe, and compliant with all relevant regulations, contributing to the overall productivity and profitability of aggregate facilities. Hands-on problem solver, working with heavy machinery in demanding environments. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background, proven project management abilities, and the skill to coordinate multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and stakeholders. This role involves hands-on engineering and oversight from concept through construction while maintaining effective communication with plant operators to VP's.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Equipment Design and Modification:
  • Design, develop, and modify mechanical systems and components for aggregate processing plants, including crushers, screens, conveyors, washing equipment, and stockpiling systems.
  • Create and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications using CAD software.
  • Select appropriate materials and components for optimal performance and longevity in abrasive and high-wear environments.

Installation and Commissioning:
  • Oversee the installation and commissioning of new and upgraded mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Ensure installations meet design specifications, safety standards, and operational requirements.

Maintenance and Reliability:
  • Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures, diagnose root causes, and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime.
  • Analyze equipment performance data to identify opportunities for improvement and optimization.
  • Manage and schedule maintenance activities, coordinating with maintenance teams and external contractors.

Project Management:
  • Manage capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects related to mechanical upgrades, new installations, and plant improvements.
  • Develop project scopes, budgets, and timelines, and ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
  • Liaise with vendors, suppliers, and contractors.

Operational Support:
  • Provide technical support and guidance to operations and maintenance personnel.
  • Optimize plant layout and process flow for improved efficiency and material handling.
  • Investigate and resolve operational issues related to mechanical equipment.

Safety, Health, and Environmental Compliance:
  • Ensure all mechanical designs, operations, and maintenance activities comply with relevant health, safety (e.g., MSHA regulations), and environmental standards.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement safety improvement initiatives.
  • Promote a strong safety culture within the workplace.

Continuous Improvement:
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, cost reductions, and efficiency gains related to mechanical systems.
  • Stay updated with new technologies, industry best practices, and advancements in aggregate processing equipment.
  • Develop and test alternative designs and processing methods.

Documentation and Reporting:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, including equipment records, maintenance logs, project reports, and technical drawings.
  • Prepare reports on equipment performance, project status, and maintenance activities.


Responsibilities

Skills and Experience You'll Need:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of mechanical engineering experience, including heavy industrial and mining projects is preferred
  • Licenses: Professional Engineer (PE) license in AZ preferred; valid driver's license
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
  • Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated project management experience, including budgeting, scheduling, and team coordination.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex mechanical issues.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Unusual Working Conditions

May be required to lift equipment up to 50 pounds. Must be aware of construction site and mining hazards, use protective gear, and take necessary precautions. Occasional work in open structures over 100 feet high or in confined underground spaces.

Travel

Less than 10-15% overnight travel, usually no more than 2 consecutive nights unless project needs requires more

The successful candidate will:

  • Work with Operations Group: Visit sites, ensure communication, perform inspections, and support field operations.
  • Manage Standards: Develop and recommend division-wide design and construction standards.
  • Provide Engineering Design Services: Develop mechanical designs while ensuring code compliance.
  • Coordinate Engineering Services: Oversee work by internal and external designers; consult on construction methods.
  • Assist with Construction Projects: Secure permits, recommend equipment/materials, and review finished work for compliance.
  • Manage Projects: Develop estimates, proposals, and schedules; monitor progress, quality, and costs; review design changes as needed.

Salary Range. The base salary range for this role is between $90,000 - $120,000 annual salary. This range is not inclusive of our discretionary bonus or equity package. When determining a candidate's compensation, we consider a number of factors, including skillset, experience, job scope, and current market data.
