Full Job Description
OBAYASHI CORPORATION is seeking qualified candidates with experience in Tunneling and/or Underground Project, including Slurry, EPB, and Rock TBM tunnels, shafts, mining, other underground structures, and heavy civil construction projects. This position will provide direction, supervision, and coordination for tunnel projects undertaken by Obayashi Corporation, managing self-performed activities and coordinating subcontractors' work.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Assist the BD group in developing new opportunities and evaluating potential pursuits.
  • Contribute to the estimating and proposal process for the tendering of new projects. Review project plans, specifications, estimating scopes, and pricing during the project procurement period to develop means and methods, scheduling, planning, and design developments for project pursuits.
  • Assist with the development of subcontractor scope packages and pricing.
  • Assist with the development of the project schedule, budget, and work breakdown structure, which are developed and in place.
  • Plan the required plant and equipment for the tunnel, along with ancillary equipment.
  • Assist with negotiations with suppliers regarding required materials and equipment.


  • Upon project award, assists with transferring the project from the estimating group to the project team.
  • Works with precon and project team to negotiate and establish the terms and scope of work for subcontractor and supplier packages.
  • Leads design for required equipment and oversees procurement of tunnel equipment.
  • Develops engineering plans and schedules for the project, including development of project submittals, submittal log, and baseline schedule.
  • Manage and direct engineering staff and subcontractors to achieve project requirements and goals.
  • Ensures the project schedule is updated and establishes procedures for measuring and monitoring the delivery of materials and progress by subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Supports overall project safety efforts and ensures safety standards are met and exceeded.
  • Supports the overall Quality Control Program and assists in implementation on the jobsite.
  • Coordinates and oversees project material purchasing.
  • Oversees the project required consultants and engineers.
  • Prepares and delivers required project reporting to the home office.
  • Oversees and manages the purchasing of required project equipment.
  • Assist in change management, gathering information, or developing pricing for changes to the work.
  • The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, those listed above, and other duties may be assigned.

Education & Work Experience:

  • A minimum of a BS degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering or a related degree is required.
  • 5+ years of combined experience in construction/engineering for tunneling, mining, or underground works.

Skills:

  • Strong Computer Skills to include Microsoft Office, Primavera P6, BlueBeam, and AutoCAD
  • Experience with HCSS Heavy Bid Estimating Software and Viewpoint Construction Software is a plus.
  • Scheduling experience preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required.
  • Attention to detail and ability to recognize discrepancies.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to track multiple tasks over long durations is essential.

Other:

  • Able to work after hours, weekends, and on call when needed.
  • May be located on-site full-time for specific projects.
  • Traveling for meetings and site visits nationwide.
  • Ability to walk and work on outdoor construction job sites.
  • Ability to carry and/or lift up to 40 lbs.
