Full Job Description
Job Summary
Manage the project engineering and detailed design phase and manage engineering services during the project life cycle for designated projects for New Generation and Generation Modification Projects. Apply engineering project management during the project life cycle including project initiation / conceptual engineering, engineering planning, detailed design and drawing submittal, constructability reviews, and transition project to Construction group. Ensures the elaboration of product scope via best engineering practices and industry standards into specifications that translate into effective project scope definition. Apply effective product risk management competence into the design packages and drawings. Apply engineering and project management capability and competence utilizing engineering standards and best practice application to ensure optimum rate of return on its investments. Provide proactive environment for design optimization.
Selection and utilize optimum engineering tools and techniques; engineering planning, engineering performance, engineering monitoring and control, quality testing, inspection and measurement. Integrate the use of project management tools, techniques, and information management systems to the project and its contractors to advance the product, effectively communicate, report, and control engineering performance.

Essential Functions
  • Leads, facilitates and coordinates work activities of others within the work group, team, department, corporate entity, or those external to the company as required to perform all routine engineering work
  • Promotes engineering professionalism and standards
  • Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision
  • Coordinates the development of input necessary to establish projected cost of all projects
  • Demonstrated ability to train, mentor, and lead other project engineers as needed within the organization
  • Works closely with the Project Manager and project controls team to manage various aspects of the project's schedule and cost
  • Manages the outside engineering firm to ensure scope, schedule, cost, and quality is always maintained
  • Coordinate and review all relevant project documents and drawings with internal stakeholders
  • Work with engineering firms to provide engineering solutions that effectively meet the project's goals and objectives, while still adhering to the financial goals of the Company and maintain projects within budgetary constraints
  • The Sr. Project Engineer may be required to work outside normal business hours as needed to meet project goals and objectives
  • Provide cost effective solutions and follow through to provide resolution as issues arise
  • Assist in developing and managing capital engineering execution plans while meeting budgetary metrics and goals.
  • Ensure high level internal and external customer satisfaction.
  • Drive functional consistency, process standardization and operational excellence.
  • Partner with Major Projects, Field Operations, Construction, Support Services, ARM, New Business, Finance, and other key stakeholders to meet strategic goals and objectives that drives value to our customers.
  • Promote the use of technology, tools and planning techniques to improve process results while consistently looking for a better way.


  • Required Qualifications For Position
  • Bachelor's Degree in an ABET-accredited engineering or engineering technology program
  • 7-9 years in electric utility Engineering or Operations
  • 1-3 years 1 year leading people or contractors
  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering principles, gas system design and budget management
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system operations, construction and emergency response activities
  • Demonstrated proficiency with industry codes, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures related to utility engineering, construction, operations and safety.
  • Knowledge of utility infrastructures
  • Knowledge of utility regulatory ratemaking and budgeting processes and systems
  • Familiarity with common computer applications
  • Skilled in the use of Word, Excel and AutoCAD or equivalent applications.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with NiSource codes, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures related to utility engineering, construction, operations and safety.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with NiSource utility infrastructure
  • Demonstrated proficiency in budget origination, management and forecasting
  • Demonstrated proficiency with common NiSource computer applications
  • Proficient in engineering/technical theories and principles
  • Proficient use of basic practices of researching technical design issues
  • Proficient in evaluating options and risks to make sound recommendations to senior management
  • Proficient in written and oral communication skills
  • Driver License, Valid and in State Upon Hire
  • Successful passing of a DOT drug test

  • Master's Degree in Business or Engineering
  • 10+ years in electric utility Engineering or Operations
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License Professional Engineers license, preferably in the state(s) of leadership duties Upon Hire

    Salary Range*:
    $82,200.00 - $123,200.00

    *The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
