As a Project Designer at Ware Malcomb, you will lead the planning, design, and coordination of mechanical building systems under the direction of a Professional Engineer. You will develop HVAC, plumbing, and other mechanical system designs, prepare construction documents, coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams, and support projects through construction. Applying engineering principles and industry standards, you will deliver high-quality, code-compliant designs while collaborating with architects, owners, contractors, and internal teams to solve technical challenges and ensure successful project execution.
Your Role- Assist Engineers with planning and designing HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical building systems, integrating design solutions into coordinated construction documents and BIM models for commercial, institutional, healthcare, educational, and industrial projects.
- Lead the development of mechanical construction documents, including plans, details, schedules, specifications, equipment selections, and engineering calculations such as heating/cooling loads, ventilation, ductwork, piping, and pressure drop analyses using industry-standard software.
- Coordinate with architects, engineers, owners, contractors, and equipment manufacturers to resolve design issues, maintain interdisciplinary coordination, and ensure code-compliant, accurate, and constructible designs throughout all project phases.
- Review mechanical drawings, calculations, and specifications for quality, consistency, constructability, and compliance with applicable codes, firm standards, and client requirements while supporting the development and maintenance of design standards and templates.
- Support project execution through technical problem-solving, field investigations, existing building assessments, commissioning activities, and construction administration, including reviewing RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, change orders, and conducting periodic site observations under engineer guidance.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by mentoring junior staff, sharing technical knowledge, and delivering presentations or training sessions on mechanical engineering best practices, design workflows, BIM coordination, and emerging technologies.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- 3+ years of experience in a mechanical engineering role
- Proficiency in Autodesk Revit; experience with HVAC load calculation and mechanical design software is preferred.
- Experience with plumbing and fire protection system design is preferred.
- Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate effectively with project teams.
- Ability to provide timely, dependable, and professional service while supporting project execution in a fast-paced environment.
- Understanding of building codes, engineering principles, and basic project budgeting and financial concepts.
