The Construction Project Accountant is responsible for managing the financial aspects of construction projects from project setup through closeout. This role ensures accurate job costing, billing, contract administration, and financial reporting while partnering closely with project managers and operations teams. The ideal candidate has strong accounting knowledge, construction industry experience, and familiarity with project accounting software.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain project accounts within the accounting system.
- Monitor project budgets, costs, commitments, and profitability.
- Process and reconcile subcontractor invoices, purchase orders, and change orders.
- Prepare and submit owner billings, including AIA progress billings and time-and-material invoices.
- Track retainage, lien waivers, and contract compliance documentation.
- Perform job cost analysis and investigate cost variances.
- Collaborate with Project Managers to review project financial performance and forecasts.
- Prepare monthly work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and assist with revenue recognition.
- Reconcile project-related balance sheet accounts and resolve discrepancies.
- Process project-related journal entries and month-end close activities.
- Monitor project cash flow and assist with collections on outstanding receivables.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and contract files.
- Support internal and external audits by providing requested documentation.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and contract requirements.
- Assist with year-end financial reporting and special accounting projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
- 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in construction or project accounting.
- Knowledge of construction accounting principles, including job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and retainage.
- Experience with AIA billing and construction contracts preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial reporting.
- Experience with ERP/accounting software such as Sage 300 CRE, Vista by Viewpoint, CMiC, Foundation, Procore, Oracle, or Microsoft Dynamics is preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.
Preferred Skills
- Experience preparing WIP reports and project forecasting.
- Knowledge of prevailing wage, certified payroll, and subcontract compliance.
- Familiarity with lien waiver management and contract administration.

Compensation: $100,000-110,000Salary is based on a range of factors that include relevant experience, knowledge, skills, other job-related qualifications.
