Summary:

This position has primary responsibility for supporting the Patient Safety Officer with implementation of the Medical Center Patient Safety Program and advancement of our safety culture. This position works in direct partnership with physicians, nurses, and other clinical and non-clinical leaders, to assess and understand the internal and external patient safety landscape.

Responsibilities:

  • Customer Service-Facilitator or negotiator that can assist in areas of disagreement. Ability to facilitate challenging situations, direct change, influence / encourage people to objectively evaluate the situation, and pick the best solution for the system.
  • Problem Solving & Implementation-Makes decisions based on analyses and data. Challenges leaders and their current processes when improvement is needed. Spread best practices and look for ways to create a standard, reliable process across the medical center.
  • Design, deliver or support providing Patient Safety Culture education; TeamSTEPPS, Just Culture, Reporting Culture, and Learning Culture
  • Share responsibility with the Patient Safety Officer, Risk Management, and OQE coaches for the Root Cause Analysis Program.
  • Lead teams through safety event investigating, problem solving, and following through with action items. Develop or review and recommend an RCA tracking program, then maintain a robust Root Cause Analysis tracking product.
  • Develop and tracking of non-harm events, looking for trends and opportunities for action planning to strengthen our safety culture
  • Supports the Patient Safety Officer with collection, analysis, and dissemination of patient safety related data.
  • Lead the Patient Safety Culture Survey by managing communications and consulting with managers on action plans with results
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of improvement strategies through sustained monitoring of performance, utilizing a valid and reliable Patient Safety Culture survey tool and other appropriate tools for measurement.
  • Serves on various committees related to patient safety.
  • Supports and leads efforts to maintain our National Performance Goals, involves policy management, leading teams, and data management.
  • Serves as a member of the Patient Safety Subcommittee, helping develop agenda items, and performing follow-up from meetings.
  • Monitors national and regional patient safety improvement efforts by attending conferences, workshops, and networking events, as well as regular reading of published research to identify innovative opportunities in patient safety that could be adapted for use within the Medical Center.
  • Stays current with regulatory requirements and regional and national trends related to patient safety and external safety measurement programs.

Education Requirements:
• Requires bachelor's degree in nursing, public health, epidemiology, other healthcare related field, human factors psychology, human factors engineering, cognitive psychology or industrial/organizational psychology.
• Completion of IHI open school patient safety curriculum within one year of hire.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
• Current certification in profession/specialty preferred but not required.
• TeamSTEPPs master training preferred but not required. TeamSTEPPS master training completion within 1 year of hire.
• Successful testing to earn National Patient Safety Foundation certification as a Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) required within 2 years of hire
Professional Experience Requirements:
• Minimum 5 years of clinical or healthcare experience.
• Experience in leading teams, facilitation, interdisciplinary team building, process improvement, or data management.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
• This position requires a combination of analytical skill and interpersonal/relationship skills. Presentation skills are required. Prior experience in patient safety and quality improvement is preferred. Experience with Excel for data analysis and Power Point presentation.
• Ability to have big picture thinking while focus on system/process issues and ability to balance out difference perspectives to bring people/teams to a common goal.
