Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Program Manager (Marketing and Communications) within the Office of Communications and Marketing at the Rutgers Cancer Institute.
The Program Manager (Marketing and Communications) provides leadership and oversight for the Office of Communications and Marketing at Rutgers Cancer Institute. This role is responsible for implementing and managing an integrated communications and marketing strategy aligned with organizational and service line priorities. Working in close partnership with the Assistant Vice President of Oncology Service Line Marketing and Communications at RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute, this position ensures alignment across key stakeholders and initiatives.
This role provides strategic direction and leadership for all communications activities related to the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant, supporting five research programs, ten shared core facilities, and more than 300 research members across Rutgers University, Princeton University, and the Princeton branch of Ludwig Cancer Research.
The role oversees all aspects of departmental operations, including staff management, resource allocation, budget oversight, and program execution, to effectively advance the Institute's mission and visibility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Leads the development and implementation of comprehensive marketing and communications strategies that enhance awareness, reputation, and engagement in support of organizational goals and priorities.
- Establishes and maintains a cohesive brand identity, ensures brand integrity, brand compliance and messaging strategy across all communication channels, ensuring consistency with institutional standards and guidelines.
- Develops and oversees integrated communications and marketing plans utilizing digital, print, social media, web, events, and executive communication platforms to support organizational initiatives and strategic objectives.
- Partners with clinical, research, and administrative leadership to identify emerging scientific, medical, and human-interest stories, translating complex information into effective communications and marketing initiatives.
- Provides strategic direction and leadership for all communications activities related to the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant and its membership. Executes internal communications strategy, including leadership messaging and executive communications to engage and inform faculty and staff.
- Responsible for the editorial development and management of Cancer Center Support Grant content, including coordinating reviews and submissions, ensuring adherence to deadlines, verifying facts and data, and collaborating with Cancer Center leadership to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Identifies and advances opportunities to promote the research activities, scientific discoveries, and achievements affiliated with Rutgers University, Princeton University, and the Princeton branch of Ludwig Cancer Research.
- Serves as the primary point of contact between Rutgers Cancer Institute faculty and Rutgers University and RWJBarnabas Health communications teams, fostering collaboration, facilitating media and public relations opportunities, ensuring alignment and consistency across internal and external messaging.
- Manages and develops strategic storytelling approaches that elevates the Institute's research, clinical programs, and impact, including partnering with RWJBarnabas Health / Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center for joint promotional opportunities and such as patient stories involving clinical trials from the Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center.
- Responsible for hiring, firing, performance review, supervision, and professional development for all communications staff. Holds and leads weekly Communications Team meetings to set priorities, assign responsibilities, ensure alignment with organizational goals, and provide strategic direction on communications initiatives and projects. Provides internal communications strategy, including leadership messaging and executive communications to engage and inform faculty and staff.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience - Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or related field is required.
- A minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional level experience is required such as communications, marketing, public relations experience.
- Two (2) years management experience required.
- Equivalent experience, education and/or training may be substituted for the education requirements.
Certifications/LicensesRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Experience in marketing and communications (including news and broadcast), writing and production of materials is required.
- Ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects simultaneously with good follow-through is essential.
- Outstanding interpersonal communication and leadership skills, creativity and the ability to function in a team environment required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of how to accomplish superior performance in a unionized environment is necessary.
- Effective oral and communication skills.
- Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience in oncology or oncology-related field strongly encouraged.
- An understanding of an academic environment is advantageous.
