Professional Engineer Civil/Structural Engineer

Bureau of District Projects and Construction

Job Summary:

This is professional engineering work performing civil/water resource engineering design work for the District. The position may include, depending on experience, some supervisory responsibilities of technical/drafting staff.

Job duties include:
  • Prepares detailed design, including plans and specifications for District projects. Prepares investigative reports. Functions as the project manager for complex engineering design projects. Reviews and offers comments on design documents, including plans and specifications received by the District from the US Army Corps of Engineers and District consulting engineers. Provides technical engineering information to other agencies and consultants for the design of District projects. Communicates with District staff and external stakeholders.
  • Reviews the work of district design staff. Monitors progress of assigned projects and provides assistance in moving projects towards completion. Performs technical review of designs prepared by staff; revises designs as warranted to meet District standards.
  • General administration and participation in District/Division/Bureau project planning and budgeting. Includes training, staff meetings, etc. May also include a minor amount of contract administration duties such as developing scopes of work, evaluating proposals and review of invoices. Evaluates need for design and related work. Develops projects in conjunction with the other work units in accordance with the project delivery process.


Skilled In:

Technical writing and other forms of written and verbal communication and presentation; supervision and associated skills needed to effectively coordinate work products with others across the District and outside stakeholders; planning, developing and implementing scopes of work for complex engineering processes; applying analytical problem solving skills and exercising professional judgment to solve technical problems and carry out assignments; reviewing work products for adequacy of meeting objectives, application of sound professional judgment and adherence to District and State standards; use of computers and all office related software, word processing, spreadsheets, GIS, databases, email, internet, etc. Use of specialized computer applications such as structural analysis, culvert design and AutoCAD.

Ability To:

Communicate effectively with District staff, public and consultants; solve complex engineering problems; develop and complete tasks with minimal supervision and within specified timeframes; work effectively and cooperatively with other disciplines, and produce results individually and within project teams; recommend alternative and modifications to approaches, troubleshooting capability and innovation for successful completion; oversee, direct or guide the work of engineers, scientists and technical support staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

Professional Engineer (Florida) or the ability to obtain licensure in Florida within one year of employment. Experience in structural engineering is desired but not required.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

Mostly office environment, sitting at a desk and operating a personal computer to produce work products with some field visits as required. Field visits would require enduring outdoor environments in uncomfortable temperatures, inclement weather, and remote locations.

License:

State of Florida Professional Engineer license or ability to obtain within one year of employment.

Valid State of Florida Driver's License.

Additional Details:

Starting Salary Range: $77,272.00 - $100,443.20

Starting salary is based on qualifications and experience.
