Full Job Description
Position Summary

Stella-Jones is a leading producer of pressure-treated wood products. We are currently seeking a Production Manager to join our Shelburne residential lumber facility. The Production Manager assists and works closely with the Plant Manager on day-to-day production operations including production planning, production activities, and quality control. You will play a key role in ensuring the successful operations of the plant, leading a team of approximately 50 employees across three shifts within a unionized environment, with an additional 20 seasonal employees at our distribution centre.

This is a leadership role for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, unionized manufacturing environment and brings a strong commitment to Lean Manufacturing principles, safety, and people development.

Based out of our Shelburne, Ontario facility, this role follows a Monday to Friday schedule with a 6:30 AM start to ensure continuity and follow-up on overnight shift operations. The Production Manager is also on call outside of regular hours and is responsible for responding to any emergencies, building security matters, or facility alarms as they arise.

Key Responsibilities:

Production & Operations
  • Oversee all production activities including the preparation line (stacker), mill, treating, shipping, receiving, maintenance, and quality control
  • Support the Plant Manager with day-to-day management duties and production planning
  • Approve production orders and interact frequently with procurement and planning groups
  • Collect, maintain, and analyze production data to drive continuous improvement using Lean Manufacturing and 5S methodologies
  • Post production transactions in the ERP system
  • Actively participate in cycle counts and annual inventory
  • Monitor quality and workmanship to ensure quality control standards are met
  • Work closely with various departments to optimize inventory and maximize recovery
  • Participate in facility improvement projects

Labour Management
  • Plan production schedules and coordinate with the Production Supervisor on labour requirements across three shifts
  • Manage scheduling, attendance, and discipline within a unionized facility
  • Coach, train, and develop a multigenerational, culturally diverse workforce
  • Manage payroll transactions, employee relations, and performance management
  • Handle job postings, recruitment, and onboarding of new hires
  • Ensure plant guidelines and policies are consistently enforced
  • Manage employee vacation requests
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Labour on various issues and requests

Health, Safety & Environment
  • Champion a team-oriented safety culture across the facility
  • Ensure environmental and safety policies, quality standards, and standard operating procedures are followed
  • Provide guidance on occupational health & safety programs and the TRD program
  • Train employees on safety processes and procedures
  • Actively participate in the health and safety committee
  • Assist with WSIB accident reporting

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in production management, preferably in a manufacturing or wood products environment
  • Valid driver's license with a clean abstract
  • Experience working in a unionized environment
  • Mechanically inclined with a solid understanding of equipment and maintenance operations
  • Direct, decisive leadership style with the ability to make decisions under pressure
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to lead a diverse, multigenerational team
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, prioritization, and conflict-resolution skills
  • Proven ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Intermediate computer skills (Microsoft Office)
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written)
  • SAP environment experience (an asset)
