Job Description

Job Summary

Weatherford is seeking a motivated and experienced Product Owner to join our expanding software engineering organization to develop industry leading software solutions. The Product Owner owns the tactical execution of assigned products by translating Product Manager strategy into structured, sprint-ready delivery. The Product Owner ensures delivery teams build the right capabilities, at the right time, in the right sequence, while maintaining velocity, quality, and alignment to defined business outcomes. Operates at the intersection of product strategy and engineering execution. While the Product Manager owns vision, business case, and outcome accountability, the Product Owner owns the "how and when" of delivery. This includes backlog refinement, sprint planning, acceptance criteria definition, daily prioritization decisions, and unblocking teams to maintain predictable flow.

This role requires an execution disciplined, agile-fluent leader who can unambiguously translate strategy into delivery, resolve ambiguity for the team, protect delivery flow, and make smart tactical trade-offs that preserve velocity and quality

Responsibilities

BACKLOG OWNERSHIP & READINESS
  • Own and maintain prioritized sprint backlogs that reflect strategic priorities
  • Translate Product Manager outcomes into actionable user stories with clear acceptance criteria
  • Ensure backlog items meet definition of ready and maintain 2 to 3 sprints of execution-ready work
  • Align backlog entries with delivery goals and PDLC compliance

SPRINT PLANNING & TACTICAL SEQUENCING
  • Lead sprint planning with engineering, aligning priorities with capacity and urgency
  • Make day-to-day prioritization decisions within strategic guardrails
  • Resolve story ambiguity, clarify requirements, and manage scope within sprints
  • Escalate strategic scope or priority decisions needing roadmap trade-offs to the Product Manager

ENGINEERING PARTNERSHIP & DELIVERY SUPPORT
  • Act as the primary liaison between development teams and the Product Manager
  • Partner with Engineering Leads to validate technical feasibility and sequencing
  • Shield teams from undue disruptions and ambiguous priorities
  • Facilitate Agile ceremonies including daily standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives
  • Track team delivery metrics (velocity, cycle time, burndown) and work to maintain predictable flow

ACCEPTANCE, QUALITY & PDLC COMPLIANCE
  • Accept completed work against well-defined acceptance criteria
  • Validate that delivered features create the intended value and meet quality standards
  • Ensure compliance with PDLC stage gates and governance requirements
  • Capture technical debt and non-functional requirements for future refinement

DELIVERY TRANSPARENCY & RISK MANAGEMENT
  • Monitor delivery health and flag risks before they impact sprint outcomes
  • Provide clear, data-backed delivery status and impediment reporting to the Product Manager
  • Surface integration risks or dependencies early to avoid surprises
  • Ensure sprint commitments are realistic and communicated to stakeholders

OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY & CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
  • Identify opportunities to improve backlog management, refinement practices, and sprint flow
  • Partner with Engineering to reduce cycle time and improve predictability
  • Leverage tooling such as Azure DevOps to enhance visibility and tracking
  • Drive continuous improvement in Agile ceremonies and execution discipline

Skills/Education Required
  • 5+ years in technical delivery, Product Owner, or similar roles embedded with Agile teams
  • Proven hands-on experience using backlog tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps
  • Experience writing user stories and acceptance criteria for software teams
  • Experience scaling Agile and backlog management for large teams
  • Demonstrated partnership with Engineering and Product Managers in execution environments
  • Deep understanding of Agile execution practices (Scrum/Kanban)
  • Skilled at backlog refinement, story decomposition, and sprint planning
  • Strong enough understanding to engage with engineers on feasibility and constraints
  • Ability to interpret delivery metrics and adjust sprint plans logically
  • Exceptional clarity in written and verbal communication
  • Proactive risk identification and escalation capability
  • Ability to resolve ambiguity and remove blockers swiftly
  • Strong partner to Product Managers and Product Tech Leads
  • Ability to influence without authority within delivery teams

Skills/Education Preferred
  • Understanding of drilling operations, well construction principles, and drilling automation technologies
  • Familiarity with industry regulations, standards, and best practices related to drilling operations and Managed Pressure Drilling
  • Scrum certification (CSM/PSPO) or similar Agile credentials
