Product Engineer - Roof Mechanisms

Overview / Summary

The Product Engineer - Roof Mechanisms is responsible for the design, development, validation, release, and implementation of roof mechanism systems, including moonroofs, convertible tops, alternative roof tops, and related systems. This role drives design improvements to increase quality and optimize cost and weight throughout product development and production.

The engineer will lead suppliers and guide the design of roof mechanism components while ensuring compliance with requirements, design rules, regulatory requirements, manufacturing assembly requirements, and key product attributes including package, design feasibility, NVH, water management, craftsmanship, and crash safety.

This is a fully onsite position, five days per week.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, validate, release, and implement roof mechanism systems into vehicles.
  • Lead suppliers and guide the design and development of roof mechanism components.
  • Drive design improvements to increase quality and optimize cost and weight.
  • Manage product attributes including package, design feasibility, NVH, water management, craftsmanship, and crash safety.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to deliver robust vehicle-level systems and validate roof component interfaces.
  • Apply GPDS knowledge to develop on-time delivery plans.
  • Prepare and present technical presentations for peer and management reviews.
  • Perform and review technical analyses, including GD&T stackups, CAE, and dynamic simulations.
  • Participate in Technical Design Reviews and sign off on technical results.
  • Release and update parts in FEDEBOM and WERS throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Review and sign off CAD in Teamcenter and document compliance with design rules and requirements.
  • Develop DFMEAs, SCCAFs, Boundary Diagrams, P-Diagrams, and DVP&Rs.
  • Lead design reviews based on Failure Mode Avoidance.
  • Develop ESOWs and Engineering Concepts.
  • Support sourcing activities, including SOBA, ED&T, piece cost, and tooling reviews.
  • Identify validation, durability, and functional tests based on SDS/ES and DVP/FE requirements.
  • Drive root cause analysis and implement corrective actions using 8D, 3x5Why, and Six Sigma principles.
  • Define and verify part-level prototype requirements.
  • Support parts sign-off at assembly plants and resolve quality issues at all milestones.
  • Assess PDL revision impacts and respond accordingly.
  • Support supplier engagement activities.
  • Travel to supplier and North American plant sites as required.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 2+ years of engineering experience in the design, development, or launch of automotive mechanisms. Experience may include internships and coursework.
  • Experience with product development, including consideration of manufacturing, metrology, quality, customer requirements, and costing.
  • Experience creating drawings and 3D data using tolerance analysis and function-driven GD&T.
  • CAD capability, such as CATIA, 3DX, or Teamcenter.
  • Familiarity with CAE tools and software.
  • Ability to open, cut sections, and measure 3D parts and assemblies using CAD; ability to create CAD files from scratch is preferred.
  • Mechanical engineering knowledge, including attribute-driven analysis, calculations, requirements, CAE, customer usage considerations, and engineering principles.
  • Experience with engineering tools and problem-solving methods including DFMEA, root cause analysis, 5/8D, 3x5Why, Red-X, fishbone, GDMA, and Six Sigma.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to create clear and concise PowerPoint presentations using words and visual aids.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple issues effectively and efficiently.
  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Ability to work in a fluid environment where vehicle targets, size, appearance, and manufacturing location may not always be known.
  • Ability to solve complex system issues and work with a variety of variables where limited standardization exists.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of applications and issues as required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing and releasing roof-system-related mechanism applications.
  • Experience with PFMEA.
  • Experience with statistical analysis, including reliability and confidence modeling, distribution models, and data analysis.
  • Understanding of the PPAP process and its elements.
  • Experience with Statistical Process Controls and interpreting process capability sixpacks.
  • Software literacy and mechatronics experience.
  • Experience with 8D and 5Why corrective action and problem-solving methods.
  • Experience with DFMEAs, PFMEAs, and SCCAFs.
  • Knowledge of the phased PPAP process.
  • Detailed understanding of materials, manufacturing technologies, and GD&T.
  • Experience with automotive body exterior mechanisms, glass/glazing, and manufacturing/quality controls and methods.
