Full Job Description
Tabs is building its first dedicated design team and we're looking for a Designer to own our design system from the ground up. This is a foundational role: you'll define how product interfaces are built across our fintech products, partnering closely with engineering to ensure the system is implemented cleanly in code and embedded into real workflows.
Your primary user is the product team itself, designers and engineers who depend on a well-documented, consistent, and scalable system to ship good work. You'll do UI work, but in service of the system: validating components against real product surfaces, identifying gaps, and ensuring what's in Figma matches what ships in production.
**What you'll do**
- Own the Tabs design system end-to-end: components, patterns, tokens, and documentation
- Lead token strategy: semantic structure, theming, density, and extensibility across products
- Work closely with frontend engineers to ensure components are implemented accurately and the system is integrated into real development workflows
- Audit existing product UI to identify inconsistencies and systematise solutions rather than one-off fixes
- Define and maintain documentation standards so the system is usable without hand-holding
- Validate components against real product contexts, identifying gaps and edge cases before they become production problems
- Contribute to accessibility standards and encode them into the system itself, not just guidelines
- Establish a contribution model so engineers and future designers can add to the system without breaking it
**What we're looking for**
- 4+ years as a Product or UI Designer with demonstrable design systems experience
- Deep Figma expertise, components, variants, auto-layout, and library management at scale
- Hands-on experience building or significantly evolving a design system, not just consuming one
- Strong token pipeline experience: CSS variables, semantic token architectures, and tooling like Tokens Studio
- Familiarity with frontend technologies, comfortable reading component code, understanding implementation constraints, and reviewing work in Storybook or equivalent
- Strong design fundamentals: visual hierarchy, interaction patterns, responsive systems, and information density
- Able to work with engineers as a peer, discussing implementation tradeoffs rather than just handing over specs
- Portfolio that shows systems thinking: component libraries, token structures, documentation, or contribution frameworks. Not just polished screens
**Nice to have**
- Experience in B2B SaaS or data-heavy products where UI complexity is high
- Exposure to fintech or accounting tools
- Coding experience, HTML/CSS, familiarity with React component libraries, or beyond
**Perks and Benefits (Full-time Employees)**
- Competitive compensation and equity
- Unlimited PTO
- Up to 100% employer covered monthly healthcare premium (medical, dental, vision)
- Lunch provided via Sharebite, plus dinner for any later in office days.
- Parental leave up to 12 weeks
- Tax free commuter and parking benefits
- Voluntary insurances (Life, Hospital, Critical Illness, Accident)
- Employee Assistance Program (Rightway)
- Free One Medical Membership
- 401k
