Job Description

As Product & Marketing Counsel, you will serve as a strategic legal partner to our Product and Marketing teams, advising on the development and operation of our consumer marketplace. This role reports directly to the General Counsel and requires a practical, business-minded lawyer who can identify legal risks and build scalable compliance solutions for product and marketing initiatives.

The ideal candidate will help the legal function enable the business by providing clear, practical guidance and using legal technology and AI where appropriate. You will counsel teams on product, marketing, consumer protection, and privacy issues affecting our consumer-facing platform.

Key Responsibilities
  • Product Counseling: Advise Product teams throughout the development lifecycle, including on product design, user flows, payment systems, rate cards, onboarding flows, consumer protection, and launch readiness.
  • Marketing Compliance: Advise on advertising and marketing campaigns, promotional offers, disclosures, consumer claims, and related regulatory requirements. Assist with the development and maintenance of practical toolkits, playbooks, and decision trees that help Marketing teams handle routine compliance matters, including appropriate use of AI and legal-tech tools for copy review and claim verification.
  • Drafting & Governance: Draft and maintain Terms of Service (ToS), Privacy Policies, and EULAs for our consumer-facing products, ensuring they are legally sound and accessible. Review contracts related to consumer products, marketing, and strategic partnerships.
  • Data Privacy: Advise Product and Marketing teams on privacy requirements, including data collection and use, consent, disclosures, cookies and tracking technologies, targeted advertising, and privacy-by-design principles. Identify issues under domestic and global privacy laws, including CCPA/CPRA and GDPR.

Qualifications
  • Legal Expertise: J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
  • Professional Experience: 7-9 years of legal practice, including at least 3 years of experience advising as product counsel, preferably in-house at a technology company or consumer marketplace.
  • Product, Marketing & Privacy Counseling: Proven experience providing proactive product and marketing advice, including privacy guidance related to product features, data practices, advertising, and customer communications.
  • Consumer Marketplace Experience: Familiarity with legal issues affecting consumer-facing technology platforms, including consumer protection, Section 230, FCRA requirements, platform safety, and consumer disputes.
  • Writing Skills: Strong ability to draft clear, consumer-facing Terms of Use, privacy notices, disclosures, policies, and practical guidance for business teams.
  • Business Enablement: A mindset focused on "enabling" the business through education and systems-thinking rather than just spotting risks.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to explain complex legal risks and practical recommendations clearly to cross-functional stakeholders and senior leaders with preference for ability to render concise advice in writing.

Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Experience advising a gig-economy platform or other multi-sided consumer marketplace
  • Demonstrative experience and judgment using AI tooling for legal work.
