Product Application Engineer - Battery Management Systems (BMS)

Travel: Occasional light travel to Elkhart, Indiana, customer sites, suppliers, certification partners, and test or commissioning locations

Help Engineer the Next Generation of Battery Systems

OPmobility is seeking a Product Application Engineer - BMS to lead the definition, integration, validation, and customer application support of Battery Management Systems for electrified mobility and other high-reliability battery applications.

This position is well suited for an experienced systems or BMS engineer who can connect customer requirements with hardware, embedded software, controls, diagnostics, validation, functional safety, and production needs. You will work across industrial, railway, heavy-duty, off-highway, commercial vehicle, and passenger EV programs while collaborating with global engineering teams and customers.

What You'll Do
  • Lead BMS system definition, architecture, integration, and development for high-voltage battery applications.
  • Translate customer, regulatory, safety, manufacturing, and service needs into clear system and component requirements.
  • Define hardware-software interfaces, diagnostics, communications, operating limits, contactor and pre-charge controls, and fault responses.
  • Maintain requirements traceability, technical specifications, interface definitions, validation plans, test cases, and engineering records.
  • Develop and execute BMS and battery-system verification plans, including HIL/SIL, battery cycling, diagnostics, calibration, communications, environmental, and end-of-line testing.
  • Support SOC, SOH, SOP/SOF, battery fault strategies, control logic, and model-based validation.
  • Lead root-cause analysis, 8D/5 Why investigations, field issue resolution, and production troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate engineering activities across systems, hardware, embedded software, mechanical, thermal, validation, quality, manufacturing, suppliers, and program management.
  • Support functional safety, cybersecurity, RAMS, risk analysis, certification, commissioning, vehicle integration, and launch readiness.
  • Work directly with customers and suppliers to resolve requirements, integration concerns, technical risks, and performance issues.


What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, Computer, Systems, Automotive, Mechatronics, Embedded Systems Engineering, or a related discipline. Masters preferred.
  • At least five years of experience in BMS, systems engineering, battery systems, electrified powertrains, or another high-reliability application; seven or more years is preferred.
  • At least three years of direct BMS development, integration, or validation experience preferred.
  • Experience with lithium-ion battery packs and high-voltage systems above 400V; experience with 400V-1000V architectures is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of BMS architecture, battery safety, diagnostics, controls, communications, requirements management, traceability, and V&V.
  • Experience with CAN, CAN FD, J1939, UDS, CANalyzer, INCA, HIL systems, oscilloscopes, meters, battery cyclers, or related test tools.
  • Working knowledge of functional safety, cybersecurity, DFMEA/FMEA/FTA, RAMS, hazard analysis, safety cases, and corrective-action methods.
  • Strong technical writing, problem-solving, customer communication, and cross-functional leadership skills.


Preferred Experience
  • Railway, industrial battery, heavy-duty commercial vehicle, off-highway, bus, truck, fleet, construction, or passenger EV applications.
  • ISO 26262, ASPICE, ISO 21434, EN 50126/50129/50657/50159, UN38.3, IEC 62660, UL 2580, ECE R100, or related standards.
  • Commissioning, site integration, vehicle integration, field support, production launch, or customer issue resolution.
  • Master's degree in Battery Systems, Power Electronics, Embedded Systems, Automotive Systems Engineering, or a related field.
