The Opportunity:
Tetra Tech is seeking a Water/Wastewater Engineer to join our Water team in Seattle, Washington or Irvine, California. This role offers the opportunity to support municipal water and wastewater infrastructure projects from planning and design through construction, while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and public-sector clients.

Position Summary:
The Water/Wastewater Process Engineer supports the planning, modeling, evaluation, optimization, design, and construction of municipal water and wastewater treatment systems, with emphasis on process performance, water quality, regulatory compliance, and technical decision support. The role collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and public-sector clients to deliver complete water treatment solutions accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable standards and regulations.

  • Perform engineering design for water-related infrastructure and water resource facilities.
  • Conduct site investigations and inspections and prepare detailed assessment reports.
  • Assist with project scopes, budgets, schedules, and technical deliverables, ensuring alignment with client objectives.
  • Collaborate directly with public agencies and utilities to guide decision-making and facilitate project progress.
  • Assist with preparing and delivering engineering reports, design packages, technical memoranda, and construction documentation.
  • Prepare design calculations, technical reports, process models, drawings, and specifications.
  • Evaluate design alternatives, resolve technical issues, and coordinate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Coordinate project activities with clients, subconsultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Support project execution from conceptual planning through permitting and development of final plans, specifications, and bid packages.
  • Provide technical design support for water distribution systems, water and wastewater treatment facilities, and sanitary sewer collection systems.
  • Ensure technical accuracy, adherence to engineering standards, and proper documentation across design deliverables.
  • Interpret specifications and drawings, recommend design modifications, and coordinate changes with the design team.
  • Independently assess engineering problems and recommend solutions to engineering discipline leads while ensuring work is completed safely, on time, and within budget.


Essential Job Functions:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field; master's degree or PhD a plus.
  • 1-2 years of relevant professional engineering experience.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license in Civil or Environmental Engineering, registered in WA or CA or ability to obtain licensure within one year.
  • Strong communication, technical writing, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Project

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience with hydraulic modeling software.
  • Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Experience with municipal infrastructure design and permitting.
  • Licensure within one year.
  • Strong communication, technical writing, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods while performing office or fieldwork.
