Title: Pro bono attorney

Hiring Range: $85,000 - $100,000/year

Agency: Virginia State Bar

Agency Website: www.vsb.org

Recruitment Type: General Public - G

Job Duties

Pro bono Virginia is a statewide initiative to promote, increase, and sustain pro bono legal services across the Commonwealth; remove barriers to Virginia lawyers providing such services; and institutionalize a coordinated approach for providing pro bono legal services to low-income and underserved Virginians as outlined in Rule 6.1 of the Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct.

The Virginia State Bar (VSB) seeks an innovative leader to spearhead this statewide initiative. Reporting to the VSB Director of Access to Legal Services, you will serve as the primary liaison to the Pro Bono Committee of the Virginia Access to Justice Commission, qualified legal service providers (QLSPs), bar associations, volunteers, law schools, and the courts to support and grow pro bono engagement. You will strategize, create, and deliver a robust suite of programs to strengthen and expand pro bono legal service; promote, implement, and report on the effectiveness of these programs; represent VSB pro bono efforts and priorities at meetings and networking events; and administer several platforms that centralize pro bono opportunities for the legal community and free legal advice for the public. This is a strategically critical position that requires a high degree of self-sufficiency. Occasional travel and work at night and on weekends is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be an active member in good standing of a state bar (Virginia licensure preferred or required within a set timeframe) and the following qualifications:
• knowledge of the legal profession and legal service delivery models, including pro bono, legal aid, and access to justice frameworks
• familiarity with civil legal issues commonly addressed through pro bono
• understanding of the Virginia legal landscape, including QLSPs, the court systems, bar associations, and Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct
• strategic planning and program development experience, especially in public service or volunteer-based environments
• strong interpersonal and communication skills
• exceptional organizational and project management abilities, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple ongoing initiatives and deadlines
• technological proficiency, including comfort using or learning customer relations management systems, content management systems, and legal portals/databases
• ability to query and analyze data from websites, reporting tools, and member databases for the purpose of tracking progress and presenting insights to inform pro bono strategy
• public relations or marketing experience related to program awareness and lawyer engagement

Additional Considerations
• minimum of 5 years of legal experience, with at least 2 years related to access to justice, pro bono, public interest law, or nonprofit legal services
• experience working with legal services organizations, state bars, bar associations, or the courts
• experience supervising or coordinating volunteer lawyers or legal services programs
• demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement or collaborative coalition-building across sectors (public, private, nonprofit)
• experience managing or working with committees, boards or commissions
