Principal Trainer, Transmission Design & Maintenance

Job Summary

This position plays a key role in shaping the future of Power Delivery by overseeing the development, scheduling, and delivery of engineering technical training for Transmission employees across Southern Company. This position is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys mentoring others, translating technical expertise into meaningful learning experiences, and influencing how new employees build the skills needed to be successful.

Focused on Transmission Line Design, Transmission Line Maintenance, and Civil Design learning paths, this position partners with subject matter experts (SMEs), field leaders, and peers to deliver high-quality, practical, and innovative training. This role supports Transmission teams in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi, requiring travel to all training locations.

Job Requirements
  • BS degree or higher in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
  • Previous experience as a trainer or curriculum developer is a plus.
  • Extensive experience with transmission design, construction, and/or maintenance.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the transmission organization, operating philosophy, procedures, and roles of engineers within Transmission Line Design and Transmission Maintenance Centers.
  • General knowledge of Adult Learning Theory and evaluation procedures used to enhance the development, presentation, and maintenance of training programs is a plus.
  • Strong oral & written communication skills; ability to convey clear information tailored to the audience.
  • Strong customer service skills and proven ability to work proactively and effectively with all levels of employees.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and proactively engage with others.
  • Must lead by example and conduct self in a manner that builds trust and confidence with coworkers, stakeholders, and management.

Job Responsibilities
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for SCS Transmission Line Design, Transmission Maintenance, and Civil Design training. Support other SMEs with curriculum development and class planning. Facilitate and co-instruct classes when needed.
  • Oversee and direct the development and delivery of high-quality training materials, partnering with SMEs, instructional designers, and field leadership to ensure alignment with current engineering standards and operational needs.
  • Create training aids and innovative exercises for real-world practical training opportunities.
  • Partner with the broader Power Delivery Training team to share resources, support system-wide training efforts, and maintain program consistency.
  • Identify gaps and drive continuous improvement of the training program through feedback, evaluation, and enhancement of the learning experience.
  • Ensure training curriculum aligns with Power Delivery Safety initiatives.
  • Work closely with the Power Delivery Training team to manage budgets, share facilities/resources and support Power Delivery workforce training.
  • Support storm restoration efforts, as needed.
