A Day in the LifeThis position is responsible for developing and performing automated verification & validation test activities for software and systems. Effective test engineering ensures Medtronic's cutting edge medical device products perform intended functions while meeting quality and reliability standards. This position requires application of technical expertise to independently determine and develop approaches to solve complex technical problems with ingenuity, efficiency and creativity. Work is performed under limited direction.
A Day in the Life- The Principal Software Test Automation Engineer is responsible for leading and contributing to the development of automated SW testing of complex systems used in surgical procedures. Specific tasks include:
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to other software and test engineers.
- Orchestrates test team activities, requiring delegation of work and review of work products.
- Intelligently leverage existing test tools, enhance or develop new tools as needed, collaborate with adjacent project teams for full system test coverage.
- Create project-specific test strategies and approaches.
- Designing, developing, testing, maintaining, documenting and validating software testing components and applications.
- Participate in all phases of product development as needed such as reviewing requirements, SW design, usability, risk assessment, and test design and execution.
- Contributes to the completion of project team objectives for on-time delivery of working and well-documented products
- Interface with mechanical, electrical, systems, software and test engineers.
- Identify and implement process improvements specific to the SW testing function.
- Participate in defect tracking and analysis.
- Effectively communicate findings, problems and solutions to project teams and stakeholders.
- Collaborate and maintain excellent working relationships with team members and stakeholders.
- Follow Medtronic's product development standards and practices to support the generation of evidence required by regulatory authorities
- All activities must be performed in compliance with the Quality System.
- Performs duties in compliance with environmental, health and safety related site rules, policies and governmental regulations.
- All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements- BS / BA in Computer Science or other Engineering discipline
- 7+ years of experience in SW quality assurance, test automation and/or test lead roles.
- 5+ years of experience in medical device or other regulated industries.
Preferred Requirements- Experience with test automation including GUI, backend integration, reliability, and performance testing, designing and implementing test automation frameworks.
- Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g. Python, bash, JavaScript, Perl, etc.)
- Knowledge of C/C++ or other programming languages, Linux OS, familiarity with UML.
- Experience developing products in medical devices or other regulated industry, following a well-defined software development process including requirement and test tracing
- Ability to accurately estimate tasks and track/communicate progress for software verification and validation tasks
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proven leadership skills and mentoring capabilities
- Able to handle multiple tasks/projects and manage priorities.
- Strong knowledge of modern, iterative software design processes and development practices including agile and test-driven development.
- Experience in one or more of the following: Cypress, Jest, Supertest, React testing experience, Rabbit MQ and Rest based architectures.
- Project management skills including planning, estimation and requirements management.
- Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
- Understanding of FDA Quality System Regulations (QSR) and IEC 62304 compliance

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$122,400.00 - $183,600.00
This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
