Job Summary

The Principal Software Engineer will serve as a trusted technical partner to the VP of Software Engineering and a hands-on leader across Engineering and Product. This senior individual contributor will learn our business, turn complex needs into clear technical plans, guide architecture, and help teams deliver important work from discovery through production.

The ideal candidate brings strong engineering judgment, curiosity, accountability, and a willingness to work directly in the code when needed. Success is defined by organization-wide impact, dependable follow-through, sound technical direction, and stronger teams-not mastery of one specific language or framework. The Principal Software Engineer will report to the VP of Software Engineering.

What You'll Do

Technical Direction and Planning
  • Learn our benefits administration business, client needs, operations, and systems so technical decisions support meaningful business outcomes.
  • Partner with the VP of Software Engineering, Product, and business leaders to shape technical strategy, priorities, and roadmaps.
  • Own technical discovery and planning for complex initiatives that span teams, products, systems, or external partners.
  • Turn ambiguity into clear decisions, dependencies, risks, milestones, and ownership; raise concerns early.

Hands-On Technical Leadership
  • Guide architecture across modern and legacy applications, integrations, data, and cloud infrastructure, making thoughtful tradeoffs among reliability, security, scale, maintainability, delivery speed, and business continuity.
  • Write, review, debug, and improve production code when direct technical contribution is the best way to unblock delivery or reduce risk.
  • Step into unfamiliar systems, prototype uncertain solutions, and help resolve critical production issues and root causes.

Team and Organizational Leadership
  • Lead through technical judgment, trust, and delivery across employees, contractors, consultants, and vendors.
  • Mentor engineers and build technical fluency across Product through pairing, reviews, working sessions, and direct feedback.
  • Create reusable patterns and practical guardrails that help teams make sound decisions independently.

Quality and Delivery
  • Stay accountable through implementation, rollout, and production, adjusting plans as conditions change.
  • Advance practical standards for testing, observability, incident response, CI/CD, documentation, code review, security, and production readiness.
  • Drive modernization, technical-debt reduction, and systemic improvements that strengthen reliability, supportability, delivery confidence, and client experience.
  • Model accountability, curiosity, service, productive disagreement, and dependable follow-through; maintain quality work that promotes our core values and perform other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Who You Are
  • 7+ years of software development experience, with 5+ years in senior technical leadership role.
  • Demonstrated success leading major technical outcomes across multiple teams, products, or client engagements and helping important work reach production.
  • A strong software engineering foundation with the ability to contribute code, debug difficult problems, and apply sound architecture and systems-design judgment.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar businesses, languages, frameworks, and systems quickly while knowing when to engage deeper specialists.
  • Ability to translate business goals and incomplete requirements into clear technical options and plans for technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Experience influencing without formal authority, mentoring engineers, and partnering with Product, business leaders, contractors, or consultants.
  • A record of personal ownership, sound judgment, early risk communication, dependable follow-through, and high-quality customer service.
  • Our primary environment includes Azure, C#, .NET, React, and TypeScript. Experience with some of these technologies is helpful but engineering judgment and learning agility in adjacent stacks are more important than checking every box.
  • Experience in benefits administration, Consumer Directed Health, insurance, payroll, HR technology, or another operationally complex industry is helpful but not required.
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, technical training, or equivalent practical experience.
  • An individual that understands the value of providing a high level of customer service.

Work Environment

This person will work Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm EST with an hour lunch break. Roles may be approved for other schedules by managers. This role operates in a professional #LI-remote office environment. To be considered for this role, you must reside in one of the following states - AL, AK, AR, AZ, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MI, MT, MS, MO, NC, ND, NE, NH, NM, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, WI, WV, WY. To ensure a secure and stable work environment, candidates must have access to high-speed internet and the ability to connect their workstation directly to their router or modem using an Ethernet (hardwired) connection while working remotely. This role is mostly sedentary and consists of prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. This role also utilizes other tools such as a phone, copy machine, and printer. Common programs often used are Outlook, Word, and Excel. This position frequently communicates with FloresHR team members and candidates and must be able to exchange accurate information clearly in these situations.
