Position Overview

The Principal Security Specialist for BWXT's Technical Services Group (TSG), is a multidisciplined security professional supporting security operations, compliance activities, assessments, program development, modernization efforts, training, and emerging security initiatives.

The role includes supporting multiple facilities, customers, and projects and helping identify opportunities to enhance security effectiveness, safety, efficiency, and overall performance.

Location

This is a hybrid position that requires up to 30% travel.

Job Responsibilities / Duties

Security Operations & Compliance
  • Performs assigned security functions and provides technical support in accordance with company, site, contractual, and government requirements.
  • Supports the evaluation of security activities and processes; experienced candidates may independently identify compliance issues, operational concerns, vulnerabilities, and improvement opportunities.
  • Assists with security incidents, investigations, reporting, corrective actions, and follow-up activities; experienced candidates may lead components of these efforts.
  • Maintains working knowledge of applicable security requirements, policies, procedures, and industry practices.


Projects, Assessments & Program Development
  • Supports the development and implementation of security programs, projects, modernization initiatives, and facility security concepts.
  • Assists in translating operational, regulatory, customer, and business requirements into practical security solutions; experienced candidates may contribute to solution design.
  • Participates and supports larger or more complex assessments under senior guidance.
  • Contributes to fact-based findings, recommendations, corrective actions, and performance-improvement strategies at a level consistent with experience.
  • Supports projects from concept and analysis through planning, stakeholder coordination, implementation, and evaluation.


Technology & Innovation
  • Supports identification and evaluation of technologies that may improve security effectiveness, safety, situational awareness, efficiency, or customer value.
  • Assists with evaluation and integration of emerging capabilities including artificial intelligence, automation, advanced sensors, analytics, unmanned systems, and integrated security technologies.
  • Participates in reviewing existing practices and may recommend safer, more effective, or more efficient approaches, depending on demonstrated capability.
  • Supports technology demonstrations, pilot programs, evaluations, and approved modernization initiatives.


Customer Engagement & Communication
  • Represents the security organization professionally with internal and external customers and stakeholders.
  • Supports relationship building to understand customer security needs; experienced candidates may develop executable security solutions.
  • Collaborates with the team and assists in preparing security plans, procedures, assessment reports, executive briefs, white papers, proposals, and presentations.
  • Communicates security information clearly to technical personnel, customers, stakeholders, and leadership.


Training & Professional Development
  • Supports development and delivery of security training, briefings, exercises, workshops, and knowledge-sharing activities; experienced candidates may lead these efforts.
  • Provides technical assistance to team members within areas of demonstrated expertise.
  • Maintains awareness of security trends, technologies, requirements, lessons learned, and industry practices.
  • Demonstrates initiative, accountability, teamwork, sound judgment, and ownership of assigned responsibilities.


Qualifications / Requirements
  • Minimum of an associate degree in a relevant field and at least 8 years of related experience; or minimum of 10 years of directly relevant experience in lieu of a degree. Candidates with a bachelor's degree in a relevant field require a minimum of 6 years of related experience.
  • Must currently possess an active DOE Q clearance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively while collaborating within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related business productivity tools.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting DOE, NRC, nuclear security, national laboratory, nuclear facility, or other highly regulated security environments.
  • Exposure to security assessments, program evaluations, corrective actions, or performance-improvement activities.
  • Experience supporting security program development, modernization, facility security planning, or major projects.
  • Experience with technical reports, executive briefings, procedures, security plans, and proposals.
  • Experience working directly with customers, government representatives, industry partners, or senior leadership.
  • Familiarity with emerging security technologies, artificial intelligence, automation, analytics, advanced sensors, unmanned systems, or integrated security platforms.


Pay: $79,000.00 - $$119,000.00

The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $79,000.00 and $$119,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
