Full Job Description
Client is seeking a Principal Engineer to serve as a Structural Design Engineer, providing design and construction oversight for structural engineering tasks. This is a senior-level technical role supporting nuclear and industrial facility projects, requiring deep expertise in structural analysis and design along with the ability to lead complex, often unique or first-of-a-kind engineering challenges.

Key Responsibilities
  • Define the scope of technical programs and develop effective, high-quality solutions to complex or unique engineering problems
  • Apply broad or specialized technical experience to resolve complex structural engineering challenges
  • Incorporate advanced technical practices, special materials/processes, and complex coordination requirements into program planning
  • Provide technical leadership and be recognized as a subject-matter expert in a relevant functional area
  • Direct programs seeking new approaches or applications of existing engineering principles, both within and outside the department
  • Evaluate program results and prepare reports and recommendations
  • Identify and recommend improvements where existing technology or methodology is inadequate
  • Stay current on technological advancements in the relevant field
  • Prepare project plans, including schedules, budgets, and staffing requirements
  • Monitor progress, budget expenditures, and quality of work performed
  • Communicate results and objectives to customers, colleagues, and management, verbally and in writing
  • Occasionally prepare materials for external publication
  • Contribute to the field through involvement in technical societies, patent disclosures, technical papers, and engineering reports

Structural Engineering Duties Include:
  • Analysis of structural systems for static and dynamic loads (manual computation and computer software)
  • Design of concrete, steel, aluminum, stainless steel, timber, and composite structures
  • Foundation and anchorage design
  • Structural analysis for impact, overpressure, and other accident conditions
  • Preparation of CSI specifications and review of vendor documents
  • Work performed in accordance with Client's processes and procedures, under Client programmatic guidance

Work Schedule
Up to 40 hours/week. Client offers multiple schedule options (5/8s, 4/10s, 9/80s), excluding Client holidays, with a 30-minute daily lunch. Overtime may be required at manager's discretion.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience:
  • Ph.D. in an applicable science/engineering discipline + 5 years of experience, OR
  • M.S. + 8 years of experience, OR
  • B.S. + 10 years of experience

Additional Required Education:
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering, or current registration as a Professional Engineer (Civil or Structural)

Additional Required Experience:
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in design and analysis of nuclear or industrial facilities
  • Working knowledge of STAAD
  • Working knowledge of national codes and standards, including IBC, AISC (ASD and LRFD), ACI, AWS, NFPA, and OSHA

Preferred Qualifications
  • Active or recent (within 2 years) DOE "L" or "Q" security clearance
  • Proficiency with MicroStation 2D CADD software

Security & Additional Requirements
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" security clearance (not required at time of hire; applicable based on work assignment)
  • Ability to perform weekly field walk-downs of job sites, including uneven terrain, distances over half a mile, ladder climbing, and use of protective clothing
