Full Job Description
Job Purpose

  • This senior principal software update engineer will perform the role of a Technical Expert and is responsible for defining technical processes, concepts and requirements as well as reviewing/judging the completeness of all technical-related work products within their subject matter area(s). Technical Experts will also support the creation and development of technical strategies or supplier capability assessments together with Technical Leaders.
  • This technical expert will be responsible for company-level Software Update regulation (UN R155) management activities as well as technical development of the in-vehicle over-the-air (OTA) software update system.
  • The objective for this technical expert is to ensure clear development processes for all technical work items are established, product development is performed and results are verified using the established criteria, and that all technical deliverables meet the company criteria for performance, safety, quality, and reliability at each step within the automobile development process.


Key Accountabilities

  • Software Update regulation (UN R155) management:
    • Implement and manage the overall application of Software Update regulation to all applicable development models.
    • Correlate with global office to ensure the latest Software Update regulation process and requirements are understood and implemented within HDMA.
    • Deploy related tools and development know-how to all related function departments.
    • Review work products submitted from all function departments to ensure Software Update regulation requirements are achieved.
  • Technical Item Judgment:
    • Review all technical work products made by engineers within expertise area and evaluate them according to established company standards or subject matter-specific criteria.
    • Utilizes knowledge within subject-matter expertise area to evaluate results of concepts, specifications, or test results.
    • Assigns homework for any deficient items, supports other engineers in understanding requirements or best practices, and follows up on incomplete items to maintain the development schedule.
    • Reviews all Technical Evaluation documents within subject matter area and ensures information is easy to understand, technically accurate and completed on-time.
    • Ensures consistency of judgment criteria with global office where applicable.
  • Technical Development Process:
    • Creates and maintains the standard development process to develop components within expertise area.
    • Establishes new methods, templates and action plans for any new technical activity.
    • Periodically reviews established processes to ensure comprehensive coverage of all requirements and past problems are resolved.
    • Investigates efficiency improvements or optimization activities.
    • Ensures consistency of processes with global office where applicable.
  • Technical Requirement Setting:
    • Utilizes experience and understanding of company or function-specific goals to establish requirements for product development.
    • Encourages engineers within subject matter area to propose and justify concept or requirement options, reviews and decides the best method.
    • Ensures consistency of requirement setting with global office where applicable.
  • Technical Support or Mentoring:
    • Reviews expectations for technical deliverables with engineers in subject matter area and supports the on-time completion of activities.
    • Supports understanding of feedback from Technical Leader or others, to ensure homework items are addressed appropriately and with sufficient technical justification.
    • Supports the technical development of other engineers through cooperation or joint development of technical issues to teach best practices or new techniques.
    • As needed, takes a role of performing technical tasks within subject matter area in order to keep overall development on-track.


Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • Minimum Educational Qualifications:
    • Must have a 4-year Bachelors level college degree / diploma in a STEM field of study.
  • Minimum Experience:
    • 10+ years of related experience in a similar role.
    • Must be well-knowledgeable about software update regulation management activities as well as technical development of the in-vehicle over-the-air (OTA) software update management system (SUMS).
    • Prior experiece with UN R155 will be an asset.
  • Other Job-Specific Skills;
    • Effective communication skills (written, verbal and presentation)
    • Ability to cultivate and manage relationships of varying levels in/out of the organization, including with suppliers.
    • Strong technical aptitude in all areas of product development including project management as well as software development and testing.
    • Acute attention to detail.
    • Solid quantitative/analytical problem-solving and decision-making skills.
    • Computer skills, both technical and non-technical.
    • Ability to multitask, manage time effectively and work independently.
    • Should have a customer focused mindset


Workstyle

  • This is an onsite job. One remote workday per week may be possible with prior departmental approval.
