Epitaxy, Principal Engineer
Job Description:
This critical role spans technology development, transition to production, and production, for multiple thin film synthesis techniques, including MBE, MOCVD, ALD, PECVD and sputtering in a mixed Si, GaAs, and GaN production environment. You will be responsible for leading production related activities related to III-N and other films. You will lead transition to production of newly developed epitaxial processes. You will manage execution of production related depositions through MACOMs manufacturing system and share responsibilities for related documentation. You will establish material growth processes for new and existing materials. You will support development of epitaxial designs for device applications.
Responsibilities include production epitaxy, material technology development, continuous improvement, and sustaining processes all in close partnership with production operations. You will also share responsibility for maintaining statistical process control over epitaxial processes. A strong knowledge of semiconductor material synthesis, materials characterization and new process development are essential to success in this role. The position reports to the Technology Development Group. This position requires a significant amount of time in a cleanroom environment.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- Thin film vapor deposition, including RF or DC sputtering, pulsed laser deposition (PLD), thermal evaporation, molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), chemical vapor deposition (CVD).
- Assist with the operation and maintenance of various instruments used for the post-growth analysis of semiconductor materials (High Resolution X-ray Diffractometer, Contactless Sheet Resistivity, Hall Effect measurements, phase contrast microscope, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM))
- Record, document, and track production wafers and perform post-growth analysis.
- Track inventory of substrates, and both in-house grown and externally purchased epitaxial wafers.
- Assist with repairs, maintenance, and general upkeep of the deposition equipment. This will include dealing with toxic and flammable solids and small amounts of toxic gas 1 – 3 times a year.
Job Qualifications:
- MS or PhD degree in Materials Science, Engineering of Physics with at least 8 years of semiconductor experience.
- Demonstrated experience in one of the thin film vapor deposition methods, such as molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), pulsed laser deposition (PLD), thermal evaporation, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD).
- Prior MBE experience required.
- Demonstrated experience in semiconductor material characterization.
- Familiarity with typical materials systems for semiconductors; III-V (nitrides, arsenides, phosphides) and Group IV (Si, SiGe)
- Must have a proven track record of solving technical problems, project ownership, meeting deadlines, and multitasking.
- Must display a strong sense of ownership, drive and dedication to continuous improvement.
- Must possess the ability to work collaboratively with cross functional teams to improve processes.
- Excellent verbal/written communication skills, including technical writing for summarizing data and findings, writing process and equipment specifications and work instructions.
- For maintenance purposes, must be able to stand, bend, reach, and tighten bolts. Occasional lifting of objects up to 50 pounds will be required.
- Knowledge of Statistical Process Control methodologies and associated software (i.e. Excel, JMP) is desirable.
- Due to ITAR regulations, only candidates who are U.S. Persons (U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, lawful permanent residents, or individuals granted asylum or refugee status) will be considered for this position.
Required Education:
Minimum of a M.S. in Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering or related field with an emphasis on semiconductor materials and devices.
