Purpose

As a Principal Civil Engineer, you will provide senior technical leadership and subject matter expertise for civil engineering activities across large, complex, and high-value projects. You will be recognized as a technical authority within the civil discipline, accountable for the quality, safety, and technical excellence of civil design deliverables, while supporting project execution, mentoring engineers, and contributing to the continuous improvement of standards, tools, and best practices.

The Principal Civil Engineer role balances deep technical expertise with project leadership, technical governance, client interface, and strategic support to the broader Civil Engineering function across multidisciplinary projects in the energy, chemicals, mining, infrastructure, and industrial sectors.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Subject Matter Expertise
  • Act as a Principal-level subject matter expert and technical authority within the Civil Engineering discipline.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for civil engineering activities on large, complex, and high-profile projects.
  • Lead, develop, review, and approve civil engineering deliverables, including:
    • Site development plans, grading, drainage, and earthworks design
    • Roads, access, and civil infrastructure layouts
    • Stormwater management, hydrology and hydraulics studies
    • Civil design criteria, design philosophies, and technical reports
  • Ensure civil designs are safe, constructible, cost-effective, and compliant with applicable codes, standards, client specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical resolution for complex engineering challenges, deviations, and non-standard design conditions.
  • Act as the civil discipline focal point for technical queries, design reviews, and independent checks.

Project Delivery & Technical Governance
  • Act as Civil Engineering Discipline Lead on major projects or as a technical authority across portfolios of small and medium-sized projects.
  • Define civil engineering scope, execution strategies, resourcing plans, and technical approaches in collaboration with Project Management and Discipline Leadership.
  • Review and approve key technical decisions, design bases, and deliverables at major project milestones.
  • Provide technical input to proposals, estimates, execution strategies, and project risk assessments.
  • Support change management processes, technical risk mitigation, and resolution of scope or design changes.
  • Interface with clients, partners, regulatory bodies, vendors, and construction teams on complex technical matters.

Quality, Safety & Standards
  • Champion safety in design, engineering quality, and technical excellence across all civil engineering activities.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate engineering standards, industry codes and standards (e.g., CSA, AASHTO, local municipal standards), and project-specific requirements.
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of civil engineering standards, specifications, procedures, and tools.
  • Support internal and external audits, design reviews, and lessons-learned initiatives to continuously improve delivery performance.

Mentorship, Capability Building & Knowledge Sharing
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to Senior, Lead, and Intermediate Civil Engineers.
  • Support the technical development of the civil discipline through coaching, formal training, and on-the-job development.
  • Act as a technical escalation point and senior reviewer for complex work performed by project teams.
  • Contribute to communities of practice, technical forums, and continuous improvement initiatives across the organization.

Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (Master's degree considered an asset).
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada (or eligible for registration).
  • Extensive civil engineering experience within industrial, energy, mining, infrastructure, or heavy industrial project environments.
  • Proven experience delivering complex civil designs across the full project lifecycle (concept, FEED, detailed design, and construction support).
  • Demonstrated expertise in site development, earthworks, drainage, stormwater management, and civil infrastructure design.
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, regulatory frameworks, and industry best practices.
  • Experience acting as a technical authority, discipline lead, or senior reviewer on major projects.
  • Experience supporting proposals, estimates, and front-end engineering activities is considered an asset.
