PRINCIPAL AERONAUTICAL ENGINEER

LOCATION: Hanscom AFB, MA

 

Salary Range: $155-$165,000 annually*

*depending on experience, certifications, and qualifications

JOB STATUS: Full-time

CLEARANCE: TS/SCI

TRAVEL: Limited, as needed

 

 

Astrion has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Aeronautical Engineer located at the Hanscom AFB in Bedford Massachusetts supporting the Aerial Networks Division (AFLCMC/HNA).

 

Seeking an individual capable of providing expert advice to Government leadership regarding their domain, capability, unique technology, or piece/suite of equipment, understands the relationship of their Serves as an Aeronautical technical expert for the functional areas critical to a project or a portfolio of projects.  The Principal will have significant experience and expertise in their domain, capability, or functional area, including the engineering principles, policies and practices required to support systems acquisition and the engineering documentation as defined in DoDI 5000.2.  

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:

  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Must have and be able to maintain a TS/SCI clearance
  • Must have an Advanced Degree (MA/MS) and 15 years of experience in engineering management or the respective technical/professional discipline being performed, 10 years must be in the DoD
  • OR BA/BS degree and 20 years of experience in the respective technical/professional discipline being performed, 10 of which must be in the DoD.
  • Job Experience:
    • Possesses the advanced knowledge, experience, and recognized ability to be considered an expert in their domain, capability or functional area and possesses the ability to perform tasks and oversee the efforts of other personnel within their area of expertise.  Will demonstrate advanced knowledge of their area of expertise as well as possess a comprehensive understanding and ability to apply associated standards, procedures, and practices. 

    • Possesses experience in identifying engineering/ acquisition strategy issues and proposing alternative solutions.  Demonstrated experience in assisting with strategic level issues and ability to work independently and as a team member under tight deadlines with changing priorities. 

    • Possesses proven leadership, team building, strategic planning, and organizational development skills. Demonstrated experience in preparing and presenting briefings for senior level reviews.  Extensive experience initiating and managing high visibility aircraft programs.  

    • Specializes in all aspects of Air Reserve Component Air Dominance platform operational requirements and roadmap planning. Manages the bed down of ARC emerging technology and advanced program requirements, conducts site surveys and ensures unit compliance with security requirements.

    • Extensive experience with defense acquisition management processes in accordance with the DoD 5000 and variations such as JUON capabilities.  Ability to lead a project team in completing complex projects and mentoring junior workforce as needed. 

 RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports and assists system analyses to include, but not be limited to, avionics system design, design feasibility and state-of-the-art assessment. 

  • Assists in providing draft documentation defining system/subsystem specifications.  

  • Performs analyses of avionics and subsystems including new technologies as they relate to system threat analysis, laser systems, computer systems, avionics interfaces, multiplex bus communications, and identify potential issues and/or areas of improvement for Government consideration.

  • Knowledge of aeronautical engineering supporting multi-specialty teams to achieve results specified by program leadership in aircraft research, development, production, and lifecycle acquisition and sustainment activities. 
  • Provides professional aeronautical engineering work involved in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for the acquisition, development and sustainment of weapon systems and subsystems. 
  • Performs complex and comprehensive analysis using systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approaches to implement, develop and document projects. 
  • Supports multiple aspects of RFP development and related technical evaluations. 
  • Supports development of systems requirements documents and systems specifications to include verification activities relating analysis and testing. 
  • Supports risk management activities and provides advice for Chapter 8 and related aerospace sections and activities in MIL-HDBK-516C, Airworthiness Certification Criteria.
  • Aeronautical Support for Tactical Data Links / Aerial Networks Security Policy:

    • Advises and assists the customer with requirements analysis, Concept of Operations development, Operational and Communications Security Policy, and field support associated with current and future airborne tactical data link, and aerial network architectures.

    • Advises in the area of security oversight, technology insertion, tactical data link fielding and aircraft modernization/upgrades, and platform integration of 4th and 5th Generation fighter programs.

    • Provides analytical services to senior Air Force and National Guard Bureau military leadership regarding current and future weapons systems, airborne networks, advanced programs, and associated technology supporting the continued integration, modernization, relevance and sustainment of weapons systems, avionics upgrades, and capabilities.

    • Participates in capability development activities and produces or reviews products related to early planning, analysis, and systems engineering activities.  Provides linkages between operational needs, system performance requirements, technology needs and opportunities, potential lifecycle costs, and establishes a technical foundation for materiel development.

    • Assists with technical requirements compliance pertaining to avionics development, test, sustainment, and operations pertaining to navigation, voice communication systems, Line of Sight (LOS) and BLOS data link systems, military and civilian communication networks, network protocols, Information Protection Security and Access Protocols packaging for network designs.  Assists with evaluating technical documents, determining sufficiency for demonstrating compliance with specification summarizing findings, recommending changes, and communicating all results to the program office, PEO, or higher Headquarters.

    • Advises and assists the Government in providing expertise for large aircraft defensive systems and sensors to support systems and subsystems engineering, technical guidance, and support to the program offices to design, develop, manufacture, integrate, test, and deploy electronic sensors, and defensive avionics for airborne weapon systems in support of aircraft survivability requirements.
