What you'll do:

The ECS CoE accelerates Eaton's growth by developing advanced controllers and power systems models across multiple businesses, including UPS, microgrid controls, and energy storage systems. The CoE also enables grid-connected assets with advanced grid support functionalities and leads validation and certification efforts in accordance with applicable grid code standards.

This role will serve as the technical specialist for power systems modeling and simulation within the ECS CoE, supporting Eaton's UPS and Energy Storage product portfolios and datacenters' initiatives. The individual will act as the subject matter expert on power systems modeling and control for grid-tied assets. In addition, the role will collaborate closely with other ECS CoE team members to drive the adoption of model-based design (MBD) and model-based testing methodologies, including validation and certification activities using Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) platforms and physical product testing.

The Power Systems Specialist will be a key member of the ECS CoE and will report directly to the Technology Manager.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Develop power system and power converter models and perform advanced simulation and analysis for BESS and UPS systems across multiple Eaton business units.
  • Develop power system models for entire plants and datacenters.
  • Define and execute validation and testing strategies for power system and converter models using Model-in-the-Loop (MIL), Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), and
  • Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) environments.
  • Provide technical coaching to a team of power systems and controls engineers throughout the design, development, testing, and validation phases of power systems models.
  • Collaborate with ECS peers to align Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Model Based Framework (MBF) strategies across modeling, simulation, and test processes.
  • Establish and maintain strong cross business partnerships within Eaton through regular technical meetings, design forums, and workshops.
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports, documentation, and presentations for peer teams and senior leadership.
    Initiate and lead design reviews, technical deep dives, and brainstorming sessions to drive robust and innovative solutions.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, standards, and industry trends, applying new knowledge to continuously advance power systems modeling and simulation capabilities.
  • Support grid interconnection, certification, and compliance activities through detailed modeling and simulation in PSCAD, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, and PSS®E, with focus on energy storage, UPS, and critical power systems.


Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Electrical Power Systems, combined with 10+ years of experience in power systems modeling, simulation, and analysis.
  • 5+ years of experience working with grid interconnection and grid code standards, including (but not limited to) IEEE 1547 and EN 50549.
  • Minimum 5 years of engineering experience in the development and implementation of control algorithms for power converters and/or electric motor drives.
  • Advanced proficiency in at least two of the following modeling and simulation tools: PSS®E, PSCAD, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, MATLAB®, and Simulink®.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new skills, technologies, products, and industry standards in a fast-evolving technical environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% domestically and internationally as required.
  • Bilingual in English and French (working proficiency in both languages). Fluency in French and English are required for this position to communicate with colleagues, customers, and partners located inside and outside of Québec, as well as to understand technical documentation in the field of our industry.
  • Be legally authorized to work in Canada without corporate sponsorship now or in the future.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems.
  • 15+ years of experience in the power systems domain, with demonstrated depth in advanced analysis and design.
  • Strong expertise in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations for power electronics, controls design, and system interactions.
  • Handson experience with Hardware in the Loop (HIL) platforms, including OPALRT and/or Typhoon HIL, covering both hardware and software environments.
  • Working knowledge of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies and their application in complex system development.
  • Proven knowledge of DC microgrids, including DC power conversion and protection technologies for data center and critical power applications.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments, collaborating effectively in cross functional and iterative development teams
