About the RoleWe are seeking a power systems engineer to lead the implementation and development of first-of-its-kind power flow studies for bulk and distribution system analysis of our distributed residential batteries grid operations.
This engineer would lead the design of and conduct studies at the distribution and combined distribution and transmission service levels for next-generation aggregated distributed energy resources and their participation in power balance mechanisms. This engineer will work across multiple internal operations and business development teams, in addition to working with external utility stakeholders, to develop, run, and present power flow studies and results. This engineer will become an internal subject matter expert on distribution system design, dispatch, and control.
What You'll Do- Collect power flow study requirements for Base battery aggregation use-cases (i.e. transient stability, steady-state, and contingency analyses).
- Choose the correct power flow study tooling for different use-cases (e.g. distribution system design, joint distribution and transmission system modeling).
- Aid in the design and deployment of power flow models that are solved programmatically, and on a recurring basis.
- Compile and present study results to internal and external stakeholders.
- Advocate for standards amendments through active participation in standards committees and technical meetings (e.g. IEEE PES GM).
What You'll Bring- Deep experience with power flow modeling tools and solver engines, ideally both transmission (e.g. PSS/E, PowerWorld) and distribution (e.g. CYME, GridLab-D).
- Data analysis and visualization with standard Python tooling, familiarity with PyPSA a plus.
- Familiarity with IEEE standard test feeder topologies.
- Familiarity with tools and methodologies for horizontally scaling compute intensive power flow studies.
- Practical experience with bulk transmission system interconnection processes is a plus.
About the TeamThe Markets team at Base is tasked with ensuring the grid-support performance and profitability of Base's distributed battery fleet. This encompasses device communications with balancing authorities, telemetry analysis, algorithms for fleet aggregation and economic dispatch, through to financial portfolio management in wholesale energy markets. Our team is made up of physicists, economists, computer scientists, and engineers; the best candidates will bring the day-over-day intensity of an operator with the foresight to drive the long term development of simpler, more performant automated control. Success looks like building the airplane as it falls out of the sky.
Please note: Base is a startup, which means priorities shift and evolve quickly. Your role may expand or change based on the needs of the business at any given time, so the responsibilities listed may not be exhaustive.
Do the best work of your life at Base.
